Babies, Aladdin and Black Entertainment Television
Beyond these factors, the birth of their child, Desi Arnaz Jr., made headlines as far away as Japan, which did not even get to see the I Love Lucy show. I don’t see the Cruise/Holmes child being as popular or as appealing to the world at large. In addition I don’t think that beyond the announcement any other attention should be placed on the children of celebrities. I mean why do people today find such fascination with the children stars have? While applauding the birth of a new life is always a good thing, the mania that generally follows a celebrity birth these days is obscene. It doesn’t say much about us the way we have paparazzi chasing families for a photo, because someone wants to but a magazine that has exclusive photos of the child. The same applies to photographers and the demand that supports them in other nations around the world.
On a lighter note is the latest list released recently. It lists the unsexiest celebrities and includes Osama bin Laden, Mr. Brad Pitt, and Mr. Gilbert Gottfried. Mr. Gottfried is particularly funny by the way, to me, and has a remarkable voice. You may not know him as well but you’ve heard him in the movie Aladdin, as the parrot, and the voice of the Aflac duck. I just find the list unique as how often do you see the above all together on the same list?
I also ran across something else. Some comments on the founder of BET. I find it interesting that there are people out there that find fault with what Mr. Robert Louis Johnson has done. The fact that there needs to be supporters rallying to him is absurd. Generally there has been a complaint that Mr. Johnson sold out. That he abandoned BET and his initial programming flawed. I just don’t see it. Why is it that when a Black African American does well, some segment of the Black community will assail them? Is there some unwritten law stating that you can only be so successful? That you can only make large amounts of money as an Black African American entertainer? That going from one business to another endeavor is some type of crime. Listen to this argument, it sounds absurd. If this was said of Mr. Bill Gates, or Mr. Rupert Murdock or others that have grown businesses and then went on to continue their success in other industries, the speakers would be looked upon as fools and/or lacking understanding of business. I for one think that Mr. Johnson has done exceptionally well.
This is what I think, what do you think.

babies - the media attention on the, and forgive me for using this, "tomkat" baby really has nothing to do with that baby. like you've said, that child is extraordinary in no way, what was most appealing to the masses is that katie homes was pregnant by tom cruise, people want to see what their genes can do, but i think they could give a damn less about the baby. and no, they are nothing like lucy and desi except in the fact that they are one of the hottest topics in town for the moment.
aladdin - i saw this and wondered this morning how they came to the conclusion of this master list of unsexy people. obviously, it must have been american's but i wonder about the demographic since brad pitt is on there because of reported poor hygiene (i don't think younger generations would mind that too much given their dating habits these days), and i would think a lot of older people who understand the importance of humor in a relationship wouldn't have voted poor gilbert the MOST unsexy, annoying and obnoxious, yes, but not unsexy.
black entertainment television - what you bring up here reminds me of something that happened the other day. while crossing timesquare during lunch there were two black women behind me speaking about the current scandal of the black stripper who was supposedly raped by white members of the lacrosse team she was entertaining at a party. it seemed that rather than feeling any kind of sympathy for the girl, they were questioning her character for her job choices. i wondered if it would have been the same if this would have happened with a white girl. would they feel more sympathy? i think so, i think it's just an unconscious learned behavior. as far as bet goes, i will say this, i criticize mr. johnson also and not bill gates or rupert murdock because they are not a part of community with strong identity dilemnas and for the most part, they don't need to set examples that impact their culture world wide. i do congratulate johnson as a businessman because he is sharp, but as a black man, because whether you like it or not, in america, black means you are fighting for a cause til the day you die and a human being, he created a platform to lift ourselves up and left no shelter from the sun....but that's only the way i see it.
Wow, I agree with you Jennifer about the Bob Johnson thing. Any minority in America has to fight til they day they die. I don't blame him 100% for the god-awful programming on BET, but I do blame the network as awhole for letting such degrading, humiliating, and stereotypical shows make it onto a network that claims to promote realistic portrayls of African Americans. I work in television and I know that it is a delicate balance to make money as a business and still provide an outlet for positive portrayls for an entire group of people, but that's no excuse for BET to have a good 99% of downright blaxploitation programming.
