The best, most popular, and different posts of 2008 on Black Entertainment USA

For my last post of 2008 I wanted to look back and see what were some of the most popular posts I had written, and what I consider some of favorites. I know I am highly critical of things that displease me, so I thought I'd turn that same critical eye towards myself for a change.

I must say that in looking over the hundreds of posts I wrote on Black Entertainment USA alone this year, some just don't belong here. Some of the comments are far more political than anything else. And I can't use the excuse I have no where else to have said these things - I do own a political blog as well.

And I admit to having a few posts where I was just far too tired. I should have gone to sleep. Or taken that vacation all my friends have heard me speak about over the last 15 years (I've had 2 vacations in my life, none exceeding a week or involving travel). But instead I must apologize because they were really sub-par, even for a bad day.

Still overall I will say that roughly 80% or more of my posts were relevant and interesting. Many are topical and focused on the events of the day. Looking back some are not as important as I first thought they were, and others far more than I would give credit. And several posts were popular that I would not have expected to be.

Some of the top Black Entertainment USA posts of 2008, as viewed and/or commented by you my readers were:

So there is a Black guy in an elevator...
Audi television commercial says we are all not the same
OJ Simpson convicted - kangaroo court closed
OJ Simpson trial - injustice unreported
The new 90210 - is it cancelled yet?
NASCAR, Mauricia Grant, and my opinion
Is Robert Downey Jr funny as an African American?
Duane ‘Dog’ Chapman to return to cable television
VH1’s Top 100 of rap music celebrates the positives of the genre

It's an interesting group of posts indeed. And I think that I got it right in those posts. Not that everyone agreed with my view, just that they felt something after reading it. And that ultimately is one of my goals.

But I looked over the entire year and I saw a couple of other posts that I thought were very important, and/or meant something to me directly. Not all of them were relevant, given, but they said something important. And I want to present them again. Again you may not agree with my view, but I hope my top 10 will motivate some reaction. [Oh since 3 of my top 10 are in the above list that you my readers have found of interest, I will substitute 3 others]

NJ considers apology for slavery (part 1, 2, 3, 4)
Tiger Woods comment impacts Dr. Martin Luther King birthday (part 1, 2)
President Bush and Darfur now - not the movie
R Kelly - next stop Neverland Ranch
Janet Jackson: Intelligence, success, and fame are not enough
Black Americans - commodity, criminals, or something much more
Do you know enough about the 2008 Presidential election?
1st Annual Memorial Pig Roast for Madden A. Cordero - please read and donate if you can
50 cent sells a new opiate to the masses
Movie Review Iron Man

I also found the time to champion a couple of other causes that aren't the most popular or widely held:
Boycott 33 variations - Hanoi Jane Fonda
Levi's 501 jeans - promoting HIV and AIDS?

Found a video on Youtube I really liked - Try This with an Xbox360 or PS3 - and one I though was an abysmal joke - Snoop Dogg in Country Music: a bad experiment

And I achieved a great step forward for my company as well:
M V Consulting, Inc and TV One Announce Collaboration - Press Release
Introducing the first 2009 model Ashley

And of course I found the time to pick a fight:
Viacom (and maybe Jon Stewart) doesn't like Black Entertainment USA. Maybe.

So I wasn't just speaking about entertainment this year. But considering all the things that were going on, all the changes, and the things I felt mattered, I think I covered a lot of what you wanted to read about.

In 2009 I will try to stay on point a bit more. But as always I will share with you my thoughts and views about the important topics affecting all our lives as well as our entertainment. And I always look forward to your comments [yes even the dissenting views that are thought out beyond just cursing me out] about what I present.

2008 has been a tough year, no matter what country race or whatever you may be. 2009 will be different, and I hope that all of my readers, and those that will become my readers, their families and friends will share in a prosperous and peaceful year.

2008 - a year in overview

With the hours ticking away I wanted to go back one last time and look at the year 2008.

It has been quite the year. Barack Obama rose from a nuisance Senator for the Clinton machine to become the first Black President, 411 years after the first African slave was recorded in this land.

The financial system started the year with rising oil, depressed profits, and fears of inflation. Which quickly became a domino of failed institutions, buy-in, buy-outs, and bailouts - most funded by the Government. And the vortex of money sinking into the blackhole of political finger-pointing, and employment worries has yet to end. But inflation and oil are no longer concerns.

And focusing on entertainment we started the year with a mediocre talent that died from his own illogical action and was catapulted to superstardom for it. As the year progressed, serious acclaimed greats in literature, comedy, film, music, and other forms of entertainment passed - barely with attention. And it looks like even into 2009, the stupid actions of 1 man will dwarf the lifetime of achievement of dozens of others.

War continues to rage in the world and in the movies. While the atrocities in Darfur continue to be waged, the screens of America are filled with blame America-for-everything political wastes of time. These films are not bad because they are badly acted (though some are), or that the scripts are irrelevant (some are just too inane to imagine being greenlighted), or even because they don't like their home nation (one of the few in the world that allows criticism of every elected official without reprisal). They just failed to entertain.

Hollywood enjoyed a year that was filled with no surprises and even fewer attempts at innovation than the year before. More sequels, spin-offs, remakes, revisioned past favorites and direct copies on the big and small screen occurred than Bill Ayers on a LSD flashback remembering his past actions. And most were as entertaining - the new 90210 comes to mind.

Filling the void of intellect was fodder so unfit as to be like sugar mainlined into a 5 year old with ADHD. There was the usual "reality" programming that did nothing but allow the public to lose brain cells without the joy of a buzz. And there was the not so subtle loss of several programs that bucked the trend - The Shield, The Riches, among others.

Another loss to the small screen flies in the face of the change in politics in the nation. While America gains the first African American to ascend to our highest office, television descended to a vision of America not seen since 2000 (or more like 1970). Several Black actors in co-leading roles were removed, or shows canceled. Hispanics and Latinos remain virtually unseen and when seen reflecting a diversity that is easily confused with another ethnicity. Native Americans and Asians remain invisible, even in background scenery. And if that sounds bad, the environment behind the camera is 1/3 as diverse.

So in 2009 the schizophrenia will be that one of the few times a Black face will be on the national airwaves will be in the news and the rest of television will be whitewashed. The hypocrisy of Hollywood and its ultra-liberal views, as opposed to its staunch 1950's actions, is amazing to behold.

And the ethical void continues to grow. The nation was deluged with images and stories of entertainers doing the wrong thing and getting away with it. From the British Winehouse (aptly named I think) to our own disfunctional and potentially child-endangering Spears. We watched as entertainers were allowed to throw children into crowds from stages, admit drug use, carry illegal weapons, abuse animals and people alike, all without a hint of true reprimand.

And as the substitution of justice we had racial revenge. OJ provided the means for many White Americans to cry out "Justice at last" though his trial was a mockery of justice from start to finish. He may be a fool, and perhaps even guilty of past crimes, but his trial was as much a kangaroo court as in any movie.

And when it comes to the law the media was very consistent. African Americans that they labeled guilty were made to look horrible, and their claims (and even jury confirmation) of innocence went unheard - like Wesley Snipes. But for the people making the media money, in music videos and records and what some call movies, there was plenty of coverage hyping their minor convictions - like Akon and DMX.

2008 was quite the year indeed. So much happened all at once it was often hard to be sure what was the most important thing to track. And just as often what the media wanted us to watch was the least important of the issues at hand. But then again this was the year where the line between journalism and cheerleading was obscured from sight. The after-the-fact admissions of several media giants that they crossed the line, "a little", says nothing of the 'feeling in my leg' they poured into televisions and thus homes across the nation.

The news media was so bad that satirical comedy shows often were more objective and less political than the supposed "neutral" media. And networks like CNN and MSNBC wonder why their ratings are so bad.

2008 was a bad year in most every manner of accounting. From wasteful spending by the Government, to political polispeak that was fair and unfair. Even in moments of honesty - like polling from various agencies during the Primaries - America showed the world that the ugly underbelly of racism still held a grip in the nation.

I won't miss 2008 overall. While I am amazed and pleased with being able to say President Obama and that I am a homeowner, there is little else that occurred in this year that makes me wish to relive it even in memories.

But 2009 is just hours away. And with it will come a new President, with a very different set of objectives for America. The new year will usher in a new direction in American thinking, where some like it or not. And the media will be forced to adjust, because even in comic books the world is changing.

2008 was they year to say "I want change", 2009 will be the year it happens in. And we can all only hope that the change is better than the reality of the year that has ended.

DMX vs Maricopa County - the wrong one wins

Oh the joy of the holiday season just does not end. At least that is what DMX is saying right now.

Earl Simmons got a late gift in the form of a plea deal. This rapper who seems incapable of avoiding a criminal act, or police, admitted guilt to one misdemeanor count of animal cruelty, one felony count of theft, and one count each of felony possession of marijuana and a narcotic drug. He has been busy indeed.

And for admitting his guilt, which no one questioned, he will receive the grand total of ... 90 days and probation.

Screw a gift, who might he have had sex with to get that sentence. And I wonder if he paid them after he got done?

Seriously. Wesley Snipes was proven innocent of all charges except 3 misdemeanors with the full weight of the U.S. Government against him and the media lapdogs doing phenomenal bits of staging to make him look guilty as hell. Snipes got 3 years.

Michael Vick got 23 months Federal and 3 years State for his animal cruelty. And he deserves every minute of that.

A minor rapper wanna-be Rico Wright got 20 years and 20 years probation for shooting a guy and making a rap about it.

Akon got community service for throwing a minor off of a stage in front of dozens of witnesses and more than a few police officers.

TI got away with voting though he is a convicted felon.

Remy Ma got 8 years for assault, weapon possession and attempted coercion. And she "accidentally" shot a woman.

Is anyone noticing a trend here?

What the hell is wrong with the legal system. If you or I were charged and convicted with any of the things these rappers have done, repeatedly, we wouldn't see the light of day for a decade - with a plea bargain. And the bigger they are, the more the legal system is willing to ignore.

Snipes was facing 17 years if convicted. He was found innocent of everything but minor issues that normally get probation. yet he will spend more time in jail than DMX and Akon combined. And I don't think either man was allowed to vote.

Considering the way the legal system has been I would have expected Wright to have walked out the door, but I guess his song didn't get a big fat record company deal first. No wonder young kids are looking at rap as a way to live. The bigger the star the more insanely stupid things you can do with little consequence. How can we expect kids to live by the rules when the people they spend unknown hours listening to and mimicking are flaunting the law and getting away with it.

I'm glad that 2008 is ending. And that we have these examples to look at as we enter 2009. I hope judges are looking over the cases in 2009 and seeing what a revoltingly perverse job they are doing.

These criminals don't deserve to be paid, or to get glorified in music videos or movies (talk about a stupid and blisteringly dumb waste of money and talent. Yet sure to make a profit). They need to be in jails, not concert halls. They need to be serve penitence, not get served drinks.

It's one thing to be Slick Rick. But there is no question of the remorse of DMX, Akon, Remy Ma and so many others. There may be an argument to be made about their sellout shuck and jive for record executives, but outright crimes should never be excused.

If I were the people of Maricopa County I would be sure to start the New Year by calling up the District Attorney's office (602-506-3411) and let them know they need to do better in 2009. And then I'd follow that with a letter to the major record labels (to many to list but you can find them on Google) asking them to have a shred of ethics in how they reap in their money. Big Oil is bad? How about the people supplying your kids with heaping doses of convicts and ex-cons as examples of success.

The year can't end fast enough.

Studios in a fight mean movie success for 2009

There are dozens of ways to tell what a studio thinks of a film. In almost every case the most blatant actions of a studio tend to mean absolute confidence that a movie will bomb.

There are the cases were the director refuses to put their name on the film, which normally will be seen as a director Smithee film. That is a sign that the director could not get what he wanted or the studio overruled the final cut. Generally not a good sign.

There are the instances where major name actors with significant roles prefer not to attach their name to a project, even after all editing and filming are done. This can be far less sure a sign as one of the more famous examples is the lack of credit of James Earl Jones in Star Wars. Jones thought the film would be a bomb and declined to take credit, as if anyone could not recognize his voice.

But the bigger examples are when trailers are refused to be shown to critics and/or the public. Snakes On A Plane was completely viral, and when the critics (and public) saw the film it was understood why. Or when a film is scheduled to come out in January. The first month of the year is noted as the graveyard. A time when few are expected to venture to theaters due to weather and lack of cash from holiday spending. The worse the film, the closer to January 1st they open.

There are exceptions to the January rule, within reason. Cloverfield did quite well, in a field without competition or quality, though blockbuster it was not. But films like the upcoming Notorious are the prime examples of January studios expect to start their year with.

But one thing that you rarely ever see, are studios going to court to stop a movie from opening. And when the reason the film will be delayed is a question of who has the rights (and thus a cut of the money) you know what they are thinking. This is a cash cow, a blockbuster they must have a piece of.

The Watchmen is something the movie studios believe they have to have part of.

Currently Fox and Warner Bros. are fighting to prove who owns all the rights, or portions, for this film. It may potentially push back the March 2009 release of the film. And the only reason a studio goes through this kind of argument is because they know they will reap all the cost of litigation and more when the film gets out.

The Watchmen is one of the more anticipated films of over a decade. The trailers for the film have been heavily viewed for over a year now. The storyline appears to be virtually the same as found in the graphic novel - which was groundbreaking on multiple levels. And the environment is perfect of a conversion from graphic novel to silver screen with the success of Iron Man, the Dark Knight, X-Men, and several other films in the past couple of years. [Not to mention the planned 4th Spiderman, Wolverine, Avengers, and several other conversions to be released soon.]

I have already said that I expect Watchmen to be astounding. From what I can garner it will be like no other film, not because of the effects but the story. It is a movie that will take movie-goers to a place few films have dared to tread. And the studios smell the money like sharks tracking blood.

If nothing else tells you that this will be a blockbuster, the court case should be the last motivation you need. Unless I am very wrong, this will be the movie of 2009. There is a prediction for the new year, and you don't need to be Nostradamus to see that.

Remembering Eartha Kitt

There is no lack of people today discussing the death of Eartha Kitt. After 60 years of work in movies, television and as a singer she is remembered for so many things. She dared to question a President in the White House - and was exiled from the nation for a time. She grew up poor and unwanted yet became a star. And of course she was a Catwoman, in a time when few Blacks were ever seen in any roles in television (and with the best purr too).

But for a performer perhaps the best way to remember their passing is to take a look at how their work has endured over time. The greatest compliment has often been said to be imitation. For entertainers that can be most readily seen in covers of songs or re-enactments of their work. So in the spirit of the season, and to see the tribute of how enduring a performer she was, I present Eartha Kitt (and many others) singing Santa Baby which she first sang in 1953.

Kylie Minogue

Taylor Swift

Cynthia Basinet

Pussycat Dolls

Macy Gray

Laureta Meci

Everclear

Les Paul and Trio

And in a very odd take on the theme Willa Ford in a 'revisioning' of the song

and countless versions across the internet

Suffice to say Eartha Kitt inspired tens of thousands if not millions over the years. She was outspoken, trend setting, vibrant, unique, sexy, intelligent, and talented. And it is that combination of things that has endured for decades, just as her music has done.

Eartha Kitt, 81, was a class act. She will be missed.

Have ice? Have a blowtorch? Get the chestnuts ready.

Ok, here is a bit of a news flash. Burning your home to remove ice is a bad idea. Even melting ice on your home with a blowtorch is dumb.

You would think that this was an obvious thing. That such a public safety announcement was unnecessary. Ah, but you would be wrong.

On Tuesday, in Massachusetts a man set his home on fire - by accident - as he was removing ice from the recent storm. His mode of removal, you guessed it - a blowtorch. Not only did he set his porch on fire, the 2 upper apartments of the 3-story building were set ablaze as well. And the ultimate cost was $30,000 of damage.

Now there is one positive in this story for this dumbass action. The owner who caused the fire is not being charged with arson, or anything else. That makes him doubly lucky (triple if you include the fact no one was hurt). The first is for not getting arrested. The second is for the fact that there are no laws that would get you arrested for being stupid.

So if you happen to be at home and have a blowtorch, flamethrower, Maltov cocktail, a high incendiary grenade, a phosphorous grenade, tons of magnesium strips, a hoard of gasoline/kerosene, or moonshine of quality and you notice the ice on the house - DON'T decide to burn or melt the ice off.

But if you are the neighbor of an individual that does not read my blog, and has such items in their home, and proceeds to burn it down, please do send me a video for the blog. And roast some chestnuts too.

Top entertainment news story of 2008

Sometimes you can only be saddened by the actions of the media. These days the media fails the public so often that the youth of the nation tend to think this is the way the news is supposed to be. You know, chasing down stories about nothing ad nauseum. Yet there were days when in a year of tragedy and triumph the best and worst of it all would be recorded properly, at least in a year end list.

So for this year, who might you think have taken the top spot of the most important entertainment news story of the year? And for everyone spurring into action to write the election of Obama, that's politics not entertainment.

Could it be the death of Charlton Heston? He was 84, had been in movies since 1941. He made an astounding 22 films in the last decade of his career. For some in Hollywood's top tier that is their entire career. In total he made 82 films, just missing a film for each year of his life by 2. He starred or was in 15 great films that have stood the test of time. And I won't even mention his television career of some 51 years. And of course there is his political activism since the 1960's.

Nope not him.

Might it be George Carlin? Younger than Heston he died at 71. He was an actor of modest means, an author of some acclaim, but a comedian among the best on any list anyone will ever make. He was the first person to host Saturday Night Live, and the first to have the mike shut off and censors racing to the stage. Though infrequently in films his career as an actor spanned 14 films in just under 40 years - proving more his influence on the American culture he discussed and joked about so well. In times like these the loose of someone who can make us all laugh must be #1.

Not even close.

Well perhaps we need to look more political and philanthropic, like Paul Newman? Another logical justifiable choice considering that he was in films since 1952, was a director/producer of 12 films, and 11 of his 64 movies are unquestionably great - still drawing audiences from youth that have never heard of his name. And he was a race car driver of some skill. And he was an active philanthropist giving away millions, in fact tens of millions, long before Oprah made it fashionable. Then we have to add his political activism, for the left which Hollywood loves, and his support of gay marriage - a hot button issue in Hollywood these days.

Such a choice would be cold as ice.

Now you might start making wilder guesses. Maybe someone Black since Obama won and is not eligible in this category. Bernie Mac was a young 50. His death was sudden and shocking. He had just finished a film. He was part of the hugely successful Ocean's trilogy of films. He had huge success in television, in spite of the way in which it continues to maintain an overall view of America as if in the 1950's. He was a successful stand-up comedian, and had been in the business for 30 years. He was a family man, and had no issues. He was only in movies for a decade, but he made 27 films of which at least half were decent if not better.

You were better off picking Obama.

No the number 1 entertainment news story in America for 2008 was in fact.... Heath Ledger's death.

Because Heath ledger killed himself with an overdose of drugs. He was 28, had made 19 films of which most people could only name 8 at best. He was best known for his role as a gay cowboy, and as the worst Joker ever (in my opinion). His death was used to slather on hype to a sequel far inferior to its predecessor.

If the media were truly honest they might say that Heath Ledger won because he made them a lot of money. The movie studios used his death like a flag to rake in money, and no one would dare say anything against their film because Ledger was dead (except me). And they have kept the story going since January, fueling the chance (almost definite) of Ledger winning an Oscar - because he is dead and made a great movie about being gay. Hollywood can't resist that combination.

Maybe I shouldn't care, but I won't drink sand because the major media tells me it's water. Ledger may have been a great person, but I didn't know him. All I do know is that he was a rising star, that had performances that meant nothing to me. His last role was all hype, and he killed himself with drugs. That does not place him above a massive philanthropist and exceptional talent. it doesn't even place him above moderate talents with better resumes and longer careers.

But lest you think me too harsh, the top 10 entertainment list of 2008 as picked by the media goes on as follows:

  • The writer's strike ends - money and media jobs
  • Dark Knight becomes a blockbuster - money and inferior to Iron Man or the orginal
  • Saturday Night Live becomes popular again - money and politics
  • Britney Spears - making parenthood a joke and drugs interesting
  • Paul Newman - he is BELOW Britney - HOW!
  • TV is on the Web - money
  • George Carlin - Way down on the list
  • Tim Russert died - which was big news and one of the media's own
  • Jennifer Hudson's family dies - horrible and sad.
[Charlton Heston did not make the list likely because he was a known staunch Republican. Hollywood hates that.]

Out of the dozens and dozens of entertainers and celebrities that died or made real news in this past year Ledger is number 1? People who contributed more to the art and society than Ledger ever tried to do died this year, but the media can't stop talking about him. It's an insult to so many that died, and to the public the media is supposed to serve.

Any death is sad, but ranking hype and money over substance may be worse.

Are these antique, and what are they worth?

Ok, so I am just getting a few rooms in my house painted The new color of my living room. Like it? which is coming out great. But I am now looking at some of the items in the house that have been here for some time. I just found out that the brass on the light switches are from 1903. So I started to wonder how old everything else might be. In addition I wonder what a few items might be worth as I don't want them anymore.

Thus i have the following collection of photos. Each of these sconces are of an unknown origin, company design, and age. The brass I believe to be from 1903 - 1910, around when the house was built. Everything else I am clueless about. Can anyone help me figure out what they are worth, and what they are?

I believe it's brass. Painted long before I bought the house. Hand Painted glass too. Not sure if this is brass or not. I believe under the paint it is. I did not paint it. The glass is hand painted though. Looks very old style. And it works.

The handpainted glass on chandelier.A close-up look at the handpainted glass on the chandelier.

Definitely brass sconces. Possibly from 1910. Etched glass. These are very nice but get hot after being on a while. They look great though. I will possibly sell them on eBay and replace them with something else. There are 2 of these.

Looks good with the wall, but iffy on keeping. There are too of these. They are above the fireplace. They look far better with the new wall color, so I might keep them. They look and feel metal. I know nothing more about them.

No idea what to do with it or what it is. The first of the upstairs sconces. This is metal, but not brass I think. Could be spun copper. The name on it is Snap It, but there is no date of when it was made. The glass has a small raised square design on it.

Selling these with speed once they are identifiedI hate these sconces. I thik it's ugly. They seem to be quite old. Hand painted and ceramic. I'm sure they are worth a bit. I will be selling them on eBay once i figure out what they are worth. There are 2 of these.

Selling these with speed once they are identified.Another sconce I can't stand. I will enjoy having these sold away. But I still want to know what they are and how much they could be worth. Any clues?

Selling these with speed once they are identified. Top view. Here is a top view if that helps anyone identify this. There are There is only 1 of these, thank goodness.

The sooner I get answers on what these sconces are and what they could be worth, the sooner someone out there gets to own a few of them. So let me know folks.

Dancing Stormtroopers? Only if Jar-Jar dies.

Ok, George Lucas has gone too far.

I can deal with Christian Hayden as Darth Vader. I survived his brat attitude and never really dark or compelling acting. I survived, barely, the existence of Jar-Jar who thankfully had ever smaller appearences in the prequel films. I even handled the bizarre and Scientology-esque existence of miticlorians that are in fact the Force, and the death of the best bad guy outside of Vader himself - Darth Maul. But you can only push a fan so far.

George Lucas has now greenlighted a stage production of Star Wars, as a musical. And there is going to be singing Wookies. And a Stormtrooper kick line [Note: this has been updated such that the Wookies and Stormtroopers may not be singing and dancing - we can only hope]. This sounds like a joke, or someone trying to make The Producers in real life. But this isn't either of those.

Hey, I'm a fan of Star Wars as much as anyone. I've seen every movie several times, know the histories of all the major characters. I've read many of the novels that continue to carry the story forward and was really pissed when they killed Chewbacca. I even had a few of the model toys when I was young (I am 40 you know). But singing Wookies and dancing Stormtroopers?

If this rings of the infamous Star Wars Holiday Special, which if you are under about 35 you never saw so be thankful, I think you are right. George Lucas may have enough money to burn, but this is not one of the ways I might chose. And I doubt many fans will agree with Lucas on this.

Now Lucas is no fool. The play will also feature an exhibition of never before seen props, models, drawings and the like. That will draw fans. That's the money maker. Especially if he gives fans a chance to buy the originals or (limited numbers of) reproductions of such. I would go to do that. But not the play.

Perhaps the only way I would go to see singing Wookies, Ewoks, a dancing Stormtrooper and Emperor Palpatine is if there was a clear scene of the funeral of Jar-Jar - or better yet watching him blasted into bits in space so we don't have to hear him. And even then I'd have to flip a coin over it.

**The original source of the story, which I link to, has dropped the singing Wookies and dancing Stormtroopers as I was writing this. So Lucas has not gone insane it seems. This is not a stage event, but a music concert with enhancements, it seems. That makes massively more sense. Yahoo, where I saw the news first, had an old version of the uncorrected story.

Still I would love to hear the funeral march for Jar-Jar.**

Viacom (and maybe Jon Stewart) doesn't like Black Entertainment USA. Maybe.

So it would seem that Jon Stewart doesn't like what I had to say. Either that, or the lovely people at Viacom (the same joyous people responsible for BET, Flavor of Love, and numerous other insults to African Americans) finally got pissed off. I believe that it is a combination of both.

Now to be fair they have a valid reason for they have done. I had a video on youtube of a portion of the Jon Stewart Daily Show, where he interviewed Mike Huckabee. Those that visit my political website, VASS, likely read my post about their conversation already. I had the video to present the actual conversation, and then expanded on it with my views. There was no question that the video was of Comedy Central's show.

That said, I am unfamiliar with how often Viacom asks Youtube to pull a video. It wasn't something they found randomly. I can say that as there is no dearth of video clips of Stewart on his show on Youtube. Thus they specifically sought out my video for deletion. So I caught someone's attention.

Now I understand how they can claim this was copyright infringement. But I really would have enjoyed anyone from the Daily Show replying to my comments. I'm a big boy, I can take sarcasm and criticism. Even better I would have enjoyed an honest debate. Because this seems to validate my view that you can say anything to far-left liberals and their programs - as long as you agree with what they have to say.

And if it was the Viacom suits that came after me, I really would love to have them make comment. There is a wealth of issues I have with their programming.

Either organization is more than welcome to contact me, or leave comment, and have a discussion that I will provide verbatim to you my readers, if they have the balls. That isn't an insult, it's a challenge. And yes I will come to you if you prefer.

On the positive side though, it is nice to know that I am having an impact. I can't wait to see a response from 50 cent, Snoop Dogg, OJ Simpson, Caroline Kennedy, Senator Hillary Clinton, Representative Barney Frank, or any of the other celebrities, entertainers, politicians and people of note that I have discussed among my blogs and 1700 posts.

And I want to thank you my readers. You and your comments are what make my posts register on the radar of the powers that be. Now that we have their attention, let's see if we can get them to get some things improved.

Hardball swings for the bleachers while NBC serves leftovers

Things over at NBC must really be bad. I'm sure that parent company GE is screaming that the bills need to get cut down a notch or 3. This has to be the reason why NBC will be replaying the Olympics this weekend.

2 hours of competition that everyone who cared has seen already. All on Saturday. Because Saturday Night Live may be getting better ratings that in several years, but they still suck overall.

If you ask me it's just a way to save money. It's far easier to put on a rerun than to have paid original programming. And since America loves to win a night of the wins of Michael Phelps should bring in as many viewers as they normally would get. At half the cost.

But things are not all gloomy. MSNBC's Hardball lead Chris Matthews might not renew his contract. That's an extra $5 million a year that can stay in the bank.

I really would enjoy if he gets off the air. I can't imagine 4 years of Matthews discussing his erection everytime that President Obama speaks. Seriously, he needs to stop sharing. Not that anyone really noticed his bluster. The naysayers will polispeak all they want but Hardball is hardly a ratings winner.

Though the program is up huge in percentages, MSNBC and Hardball still trail badly in total viewers - which is the only thing that really matters. And that is with massive amounts of selling-out to Democrats and rallying for Obama like political cheerleaders.

Now the real question is if Chris Matthews does leave it will be to run for Senate in Pennsylvania. So could he win? I can imagine his slogan now, "I just want to be closer to Obama, please elect me."

Representative Murtha, and various polls, may state that much of Pennsylvania is redneck, but Matthews is still unpleasant, a sellout, and liberal. I can't imagine him winning. But I will say this in his favor, he is more qualified than Caroline Kennedy. Yet that isn't saying much.

So GE is looking forward to a couple of Christmas gifts. And we the public get a retread and a worn old tread at best. Must see TV, I think not.

For the start of the year we featured Ms. France in a calendar that covers all 12 months of the year. This is in addition to greeting cards, posters, and other items that you might find useful. All of the items display clothing lines that have themes that can be used all year long, and Ms. France as the model.

Mauricia Grant beats NASCAR, sort of

Back in June of this year I spoke about an issue that hit the headlines. It was big news, especially if you are a fan of NASCAR. Mauricia Grant filed a lawsuit based on sexual and racial and gender abuses as well as discrimination. This was no simple little issue either. She was asking for $225 million dollars.

Mauricia Grant is one of a handful of individuals in NASCAR that is Black or female. She is both. And according to the suit the harassment she went through would have made you think that we were living in the 1950's as opposed to 2008. Obviously NASCAR jumped on this and launched an investigation immediately.

As you might expect there were denials across the board. Ms. Grant was explained away as a bad worker and there were plenty of reasons given for her termination. Yet NASCAR fired Tim Knox and Bud Moore who were named in the suit for exposing themselves to Ms. Grant. David Duke was fired shortly thereafter. In each case NASCAR denied to reveal why the men were fired, but claimed they had nothing to do with the lawsuit. How odd.

As Much as NASCAR tried to keep this quiet it would not go away. And based on the firings, they knew if this reached a courtroom they would lose fans, potential new fans, and a boatload of money. None of these reasons were in their favor. And God forbid that Al Sharpton jumped on this bandwagon. The press coverage would be devastating for this sport.

So today, just in time for Christmas, NASCAR made a settlement. The amount of the settlement has remained unspoken at this time. If I had to guess I would say that Ms. Grant will not have to worry about getting a new job. Ever. Even with President Obama's proposed new tax plan. Even if she were in New York State.

But NASCAR did say

"We're glad to have the case settled on mutually acceptable terms," NASCAR spokesman Ramsey Poston said Thursday. "NASCAR remains dedicated to maintaining a professional work environment for all employees at all times, and we wish Ms. Grant well in her future endeavors."

I bet they do.

I said in June

"I would like to believe that NASCAR as a whole is not like the allegations that have been leveled against them. I would like to believe that the fans of NASCAR do not share such beliefs. But I am hard pressed to believe that.

Were NASCAR to present the various trophies swaddled in a confederate flag, I would not be surprised. Nor would multitudes of the fans who carry their own flags, cars adorned ala the General Lee (name of the Dukes of Hazzard car), and robed in confederate flags made into shirts, shorts, pants and more. Were NASCAR to have a KKK night, handing out white robes to fans and lighting the track with burning torches, I would be mildly shocked. Not because they did it, but that inevitiably it would be televised. I’m sure some of the NASCAR fans dream of such a night."

Perhaps this will open up NASCAR in a way that it has steadfast refused to do for decades. Perhaps now it will be an environment that not only is open but non-hostile. Because there is always the option of another lawsuit, and Reverend Al.

Besides, NASCAR drools for the day that rappers and hip hop entertainers show up at a race or event. They aren't fools, they want a piece of the nearly $1 trillion that African Americans spend every year. But they have to earn it. With our trust and inclusion. Not a lot to ask for I think.

In a year of injustices and some of the worst judgements I've seen in a while, it's nice to see that Ms. Grant won. Because when it comes to NASCAR every African American has won. Now it's just a wait-and-see game.

You'll know if things change the first time you see a NASCAR event and it's not plastered with Confederate Flags.

Akon assualts minor and get community service

Talk about the mixed messages rappers and the like are sending to kids today. Akon just got off scott-free and Soulja Boy is apologizing for his vulgar language. But overall I have to wonder why entertainers today seem so much more like children that never grew up than ever before.

Well maybe not all entertainers, that would be unfair. But in the world of hip hop and rap it seems to be exactly true. I mean how many times has DMX, Snoop Dogg, TI, and the rest been arrested? And I can more readily count the rappers that don't use foul language, on and off stage, since 1992 on one hand that do use it. Add to that the constant use and glorification of drugs and abuse of women. And these are the people I observe little kids reciting songs of and dancing to. But they aren't responsible for any negative consequences, of course.

But I don't understand how Akon, Aliaune Thiam, got his plea bargain. He admitted to throwing a minor off a stage and into a crowd at a concert. There was video tape of the event. There were officers standing next to him. His guilt was never in question.

Yet he got 65 hours of community service and a fine of $250. He apologized to the minor and his parents. That's it. Hello! Endangering the life of a minor and assault and he got just that with witnesses and video tape? Let a regular person try half that and guess how long you'll be in jail.

I have to believe that the only reason he walked on this is that some serious hush money went to the family. It may not be recorded as part of the plea but I bet it happened. That seems the only way an obviously guilty as sin Akon isn't in a jail cell awaiting his lawsuit date. And the woman that was struck by the child he threw into the crowd probably got a piece of that cake too. Because I can't see any jury not approving damages for that.

No wonder kids today want to be rappers instead of getting an education or a career. In the rap hip hop industry it is possible to live like a vulgar sleezy Peter Pan. Laws are parted like a knife through butter. Excesses of drugs and alcohol are ignored. Promiscuity is promoted from music video shoots to the stage and beyond. Hell, rock n' roll stars don't get all this treatment (well not as often, and not always to the benefit of record sales). This is the one industry where being a slovenly pig is an accolade and cash generator. Why grow up?

The Fishkill prosecutor and judge have failed the public. Not just their community but the nation. They have supported the idea that thugs succeed in the "ghettofabulous" lifestyle they glorify. That all their abuses of law and people is justified by the fact they have a marginal debatable skill. And because of this no child and no parent has won.

This was not justice. This was money. Because of the money involved justice was perverted and we the public have been sullied.

Adolph Hitler is just a name?

Ok, this is for the record books. Better yet, let me start with a simple question. Would you name your child after a mass murderer? How about naming the child after a historical leader? That just happened to kill hundreds, or thousands, or millions? So in effect would you name your kid Idi Amin Jones, or Ghengis Khan Thomas, or Adolph Hitler Clinton, or Joseph Stalin Vincenzo?

I think any parent, in any country, would not do this to their child. Parents that would do this are very questionable on several levels. (Though I do have to admit a certain like for Ghengis Vass - but I don't have kids and it is a whimsy).

But it seems that at least one set of parents in New Jersey think that Adolph Hitler Campbell is a great name for their child. Now these aren't some rock star entertainer parents that were perhaps drunk, stoned, or otherwise mentally impaired when naming their kids. This is not some kind of social protest like Dweezil or Moon Unit (for younger readers yes those are names of rock star kids). They just think the name is good.

The father of the kids explains

"no one else in the world would have that name."

Except a name is not just a name. A cracker is a name, but most Whites don't want to be called that. And being named after the most vile human being in at least the last century sure isn't going to help the kid socially, outside of neo-Nazi camp.

What disturbs me most about this is the fact that the other kids in this family share in the same kind of naming. JoyceLynn Aryan Nation Campbell and Honszlynn Hinler Jeannie Campbell. But don't think the family are racists. Again the dad said

"There's a new president and he says it's time for a change; well, then it's time for a change," the 35-year-old continued. "They need to accept a name. A name's a name. The kid isn't going to grow up and do what (Hitler) did."

So we have a family that adores the names of Nazi's, wants their kids named after them. The dad was raised to not associate with other races, and wears military boots of dead Nazi soldiers. What are the chances of the kid growing up to be a racist, if not a full blown mind-numb neo-Nazi freak?

Of course all this came about because of a birthday cake for little Adolph. At least one supermarket refused, Greenwich ShopRite, and cheers to them. But sadly the cake was made with the full name inscribed thanks to the Wal-Mart in Easton Pennsylvania. And reportedly there was a party on Sunday, with the father Heath Campbell wearing his Nazi boots, that had children of mixed races their. I just have to wonder where he got them to come from to get to the party and how much that cost instead of the clown.

Honestly I feel bad for the kids. Their parents may not be neo-Nazi racist mentally deranged freaks, but they sure sound like it. And the kids will be the ones that suffer for their parents failures.

What dog would you pick?

Ok, here is a question. I am planning on getting a dog. But I'm not sure which type of dog would be best for me. So since I know many of my readers have pets, and you are an intelligent group of people, who better to ask for an opinion from.

A couple of facts first. I own a 2005 sq ft 2 story home. I have a small but fenced in yard. And I live within minutes of a vet. I'm single with no kids. I work from home a great deal, but occasionally do take business trips. And yes I can afford a dog. And I will get the dog once my carpets are all removed, so wood floors.

In the past I have owned Chows. I like Bulldogs, great character, but I don't think they can handle the stairs in the house. I hate pitbulls, dislike Rotweilers, and generally frown on small dogs. In fact I'm thinking of a mid-sized dog, of moderate maintenence. The climate in my area (Binghamton NY) is generally rainy, very cold in the winter, and moderate to hot spring and summer.

Given these facts what might you suggest, and why? I really would like to know. And once I pick my dog, I will have photos up for you all to see.

The movies of 2009 - part 2

Continued from part 1...

But lest you believe every movie in 2009 will only be a sequel, video game, or comic book here are some of the better, and worse, things to look forward to. Some of these I have discussed in more detail previously.

2012 Doomsday
The world will end. And the Mayans knew it thousands of years ago.

And on that theme is Seeking Closure. A very different style of movie, and indie at that.

And then just 2012

Yes there will be a lot of these films in the coming years.

And on that same theme is Know1ng with Nicolas Cage. Kind of like NEXT but on a different level.

And of course I think that The Wave will be interesting on several levels. While technically a remake of a TV movie, I separate it. Based on fact. It could happen again today. Some hope it will

And of course at the bottom of the heap is Notorious. Avoid this glorification of a life wasted. It's just not worth the time. And yet I am sure that it will be in every inner city, and make all it's money back and then some. Shame.

The movies of 2009

With 2008 quickly coming to an end it's time to look forward to 2009 and the films we can expect to see. So far several of the biggest movies look to be no better than the fare presented to us in 2008. Hollywood seems to have forgone entertainment for quick easy bucks. But we can hope that at least this time they might gwet some of these retreads right.

What we do know for sure is that there will be at least 4 movies that are sequels, 4 that are based on comic books, graphic novels and/or cartoons. There will also be at least 2 movies based on video games. Originality seems to be dead.

Starting with cartoons and comic books we have Dragonball. Based on the original manga, this japanese sensation has taken the world by storm. Dragonball (in which I include Dragonball Z) is the most watched cartoon in the world, with an estimated 64 million fans across the world. That also puts it far above shows like Seinfeld, Friends, American Idol, Survivor and so many other television shows. So expect this to be completely screwed up, sadly. Even worse since Chow Yung Fat is in it.

All the better trailers got pulled. Sorry.

Next on the list will be Watchmen. I've discussed this previously. You will want to see this. From everything I can tell this is a near literal translation of the graphic novel, which means an experience that truly will be entertaining by definition.

Then there is GI Joe. A decent cartoon and previously done as an animated film before they became all the rage. This will be live action like Dragonball. The potential is there for a good film, though the characters and storyline are being changed. Instead of all Americans it will be international and include a bad guy that was a former American GI Joe. Thank Hollywood for that bit of tarnish.

Best I could find is a discussion of the cast if that helps. I hate presenting fan fiction instead of a trailer.

Then there are the sequels. Lots of them.

Wolverine is of course on top of the list. As one of the most popular X-Men ever, and as personafied by Hugh Jackman expectations are high. It looks like this group of writers actually read the source comic books and got it right.

Another talked about trailer is Fast and Furious. With the prior 2 movies being bombs, and with the assurance that Paul Walker cannot handle a film lead on his own, Vin Deisel is back. So is Michelle Rodriguez. Of course the fact that both have had problems being bankable may have more to do with this version. Does that mean it will be good?

Another sequel with lots of cars and following up a prior theme is Transformers 2. The first film was short on plot, full of holes, and stupid. But it made money. What can we expect from the first sequel (of undobtedly many more). This is possibly a fan made trailer. Can't be quite sure.

But I can be sure of this next trailer. Terminator 4: Salvation. With Christian Bale who is a very good actor. No more Governator though. Still it looks decent if not a bit gritty. This John Connor looks far better than the one in the 3rd film too. Should be quite the film, and a secure box office smash.

And more of a prequel than sequel is the new Star Trek movie. From what I have seen so far I am unimpressed. Maybe younger fans that have never seen the original might like it. Fans of Star Trek: Enterprise might like it. Fans of Voyager could like it. But not anyone else I think. Unless there is a lot more to the film than what the trailer hints at.

And then there are the video game movies. Honestly the video games today are more like movies than the movies. And of better quality. But occasionally we get something good. Here are the 2009 choices.

Halo

As best as I can tell this is what the movie may look like and contain. There are a slew of fakes out there but this seems authentic. And if it is real it starts kind of slow. But it definitely give the impression that if this is how the movie starts, it will just get really crazy and fast from there.

Then there is the Prince of Persia: Sands of Time. Another good game with an interesting trailer for the theaters.

And then there is the classic game Legend of Zelda. While the movie is focused on the original game in the setting it seems to also have deviated quite a bit too. But there have been numerous versions of the game in the last 20 years so a bit of mixing is to be expected. This will likely be very family friendly with at least one love story in it for the ladies. Will it be worthy of the title?

Viewer comment about 50 Cent

Some of my long-time readers may recall that I recently commented on the MTV program featuring 50 Cent. I'm sure they would also recall my thoughts about this particular gangsta rapper.

"So Curtis Jackson will be getting a television show on MTV. Viacom must be drooling. The executives there must salivate inbetween laughter at the thought that a ex-convict, crack drug dealer, making them money legally. It’s such a dumb idea that it probably will work."

Well in that post I also had a Youtube video commentary.

Now that commentary received more than just a few vulgar comments. Few were in english and contained a full thought. But one did. And I present that well thought out, interesting comment.

"Dear VassMike:

In your youtube rant, you have brought up many good points, and others that are not so good, witch I intend to address in this letter.

First, you are right, the whole 50 cent show is laughable if not a bad idea. It probably promotes various bad influences, however, no more so then any other shows aiming for the same adolescent audience group. The same group that 50 targets to make his money. And it works, he is filthy rich.

As for your proposal that he does not know any business other then crack and rap, is mislead. He had many other business movements. Such as a clothing line, bottled vitamin water (which he sold to Coca-Cola for millions), and probably more. He is very skilled and knowledgeable in what he does.

The rap is an easy skill comment shows ignorance in the subject. Rap is not an easy skill, in-fact it is very hard. To create flow with rhyme, syncing with a beat, and remaining comprehendible is no easy feat. Hence, most rappers do not know how to do this.

50 Cent (not 50 Cents) chose his name because 50 Cent was urban talk for something, which I can not recall at this time. It is not based on dollar value. This is why its 50 Cent (singular).

Now, I am hesitant to mention this because I am not 100% sure on this, however, I will write it anyway. 50 Cent, I am pretty sure, had put lots of money into urban areas in an attempt to make "hood" life better, but kept it hush hush so that it would not tarnish his name. And by tarnish, I only mean in the sense to make him look soft and lose record sells.

As for the crack "poisoning" people comment, I would like to say, no more than Players or Demoria cigarettes. Tobacco and alcohol poison people. I seen parents buy cigarettes over food for there children. The very same thing you are smoking in your video. I understand it is a lesser evil, but an evil none the less.

Please do not take this letter as an attack. You seem to be a clean cut, self respecting, and political kind of guy. This I like about you. However, I just feel that your attacks should not be so much on 50 Cent, and more on the whole video game/movie/music industry that allows this "its cool to be a gangster" concept come into play.

I myself do enjoy such music/movie/video game violent concepts because it acts as an outlet for my aggression, its entertaining. But I do not act in such a manner in the real world. It is a shame though, for those who are influenced and act out as they do on TV. There just needs to be better parents.

Sincerely,
ShadowsAndGhosts "

How much for a Yahoo accolade?

I noticed something over the weekend. Yahoo had a little blurb on the top movie stars of 2008. It was an interesting photo selection for one big reason. Almost every one of the people they were touting had a flop in 2008.

The list starts with Gong Li. You may not recall her name. Then again you probably didn't recall Hannibal Rising, with good reason. The list moves on to Nicole Kidman. She has become synonymous with Hollywood failure, which the film Australia confirms yet again. But then the list loses all perspective. It goes into a tailspin of stupidity.

The next "actress" on the list is Paris Hilton. A woman so without talent she couldn't make sex look interesting to watch. Her claim to fame was the film the Hottie and the Nottie. The hottest thing about the film is akin to the apparent intelligence of Hilton - just not being there at all. Is the possibility she will inherit a major company really that important to Hollywood?

The list moves on to Jennifer Lopez. Who is lauded for giving birth to twins. Which does deserve notice. But not on a list of top movie performers. Even when some thought she had a movie career she was bad. And she hasn't gotten better.

To disguise the fact that there were so few good movies and to bolster the huge number of movie stars with flops the list then goes international with Aishwarya Rai. She is a top Bollywood actress. I've never seen her in a film and have no comment.

But the list jumps back to the ridiculous with Hillary Duff and her performance in the mega-flop War, Inc. I reviewed that movie and to summarize both her performance and the movie, disappointing and a waste of time.

The list goes on to name Mary Kate Olsen, The Wackness, Lindsey Lohan, Chapter 27, Jessica Alba, The Love Guru, right up to Angelina Jolie. Jolie is the only actress on the list with a film the average person can say they saw, and actually liked. She is the only woman on the list (perhaps excluding Rai) that had films that made real money. In effect only she and perhaps Rai deserve to be on a list of top movie stars. The rest need to be on the top of a pile of dung for their performances.

The list then turns to men. And the choices are only moderately better. The star is with Tom Cruise because of his appearance in the flop Tropic Thunder, but more likely the Valkyrie movie that has yet to show. Next we get Patrick Swayze - because he has pancreatic cancer. Like Lopez I have to wonder how that has anything to do with movies. It's sad, but it does not go to the top of a list of movies.

Then the list does another odd change of direction. They pick Denzel Washington, who did not have a film in 2008. But at least he was nominated for an award this year. That's closer to a reason to be on this list then most. The list then flies off with failures like Bankock Dangerous (remake) with Nicolas Cage, Orlando Bloom - also without a movie this year. At this point we finally get to someone who was in a movie that made money and most people saw (for the men).

Will Smith is 5th with Hancock and the upcoming Seven Pounds. And right above him on the list is Brad Pitt with a flop - Burn After Reading - and the nominated Benjamin Button arthouse film. Leonardo DiCaprio broke even as I recall with Body of Lies but took 3rd. Next is Johnny Depp who like Bloom and Washington didn't have a film, and like Washington was nominated. And of course 1st went to the dead guy Hollywood can't stop talking about - heath ledger.

This entire list is Bollocks. Of the entire group Aishwarya Rai, Angelina Jolie, Will Smith, and Heath Ledger deserve to be on it. Maybe an honorable mention to Brad Pitt and Tom Cruise. That's it.

I don't know what pipe the people at Yahoo are smoking, but it must be powerful. Either that, or there must be one hell of a kickback coming from advertising for Yahoo to tout this kind of rubbish as a top list of anything. Maybe if they named it the Top Movies Stars of 2008 - whose companies gave us a lot of money. Or is that too long.

And people wonder why the quality of movies is dropping faster than the average IQ of a high school graduate. When you can buy accolades who needs writing. It's just sad.

Rappers beware Senegal

Gangsta rappers in the U.S. should be happy that world tours don't normally include Senegal, nor any nations similar to it. As tough as they would like to say they are, and a few are indeed all the criminal low-life they propose to be, I imagine most would look quite bad skittering across the stage.

Now the reason I say this is because in Senegal a man of 70 decided to let a group of rappers performing on stage know how he felt about the lyrics they were spewing. He did so with a rifle. Suffice to say they stopped performing.

The reason for this incident was because the elderly man was offended by the lyrics of a particular rap. It dealt with a "cranky old man". The 70 yr old felt it was a disrespect to him, I am lead to believe. When the performers would not abandon the song, he opened fire.

I do not advocate the use of a weapon on entertainers. Not even for rappers that I personally find to be lower than scum for their admitted (and potentially over-glorified) role in dispersing poison (in the form of drugs) to communities. Not even for a horrendous performance. But I can see how the man could have been so enraged.

As I am aware, Senegal is not the most progressive nation in the world. I could be wrong as I have not been there and base this on the news I have seen. So that is a factor. But I have to wonder what would happen in the U.S. if parents and adults took a non-violent yet similar stance to rappers.

What if parents refused to allow their kids to buy the albums that contain offensive lyrics, or watch videos with allusions of drug-fueled grandeur? What if entire communities protested when admitted drug criminals performed in their area? What if felons of violent crimes and drug charges were shouted down when they get on stage and begin songs that promote the death of children by imitating or glorifying their illegal path?

Or on a more personal level what if parents stopped buying the records, and provocative clothing? Blocked the BET's from their cable channels, and monitored the songs their kids listen to? Wouldn't that be something.

Yes kids would still be able to listen to songs and rappers when they are out of the home. But that is a limited time. Unless you allow the child to roam the streets, even after 11pm at 12 years old, as I have seen in some places. Because parents have the power.

A child has no money of their own. They don't work. So either you are buying the trash for them or you aren't paying attention on what they are doing. Because if they have a new pair of stupidly expensive jeans that don't fit and sneakers that cost over $100 and you didn't pay for it you should ask questions and get involved.

But my main point is this. While the Senegalese man was over the top in his reaction, he had a reaction. In the face of apparent disrespect and dismissal of his complaint he did something. The wrong thing, but something. How many parents in America have done something? As I mentioned, by the number of kids roaming streets far beyond any reason, the number of those that dropout of high school, become single parents, get addicted to drugs, and die before the age of 25 they are not doing much.

Gangsta rap is a business like any other. Were it the equivalent of a pharmaceutical company it would have been recalled and banned due to its negative side-effects a decade ago or more. But this is the music industry, and unlike in Senegal many just accept the insults, profanity, degradation, and promotion of illicit drug use because 'it's just music'.

Rappers, like all artists, have the freedom of speech. I respect their right to perform as they choose. But that does not mandate an obligation on my part to listen nor provide them a financial incentive to continue. Even if they are Black or Latino. Call that my non-violent Senegal-style gunshot to the gangsta rappers.

Hollywood movies: Remakes are king, or are they

There are a lot of remakes, or revisioned movies, coming out of Hollywood these days. And based on rumors and confirmed fact we can expect dozens more really soon. That says nothing of comic book, video game, and novel conversions to film.

So here are my thoughts on the bulk of these movies. Do you agree?

Update on The Day The Earth Stood Still

Way back in August this year I mentioned my preview of The Day The Earth Stood Still. In that preview I had only one video clip of the film to judge the revisioning of the 1951 classic by. And I stated that it would be more of a waste of money than the total auto industry bailout - well not the bailout but a waste of time. But I also made a couple of assumptions.

While I am right that this film is a disservice to the original, and is yet another example of why a revisioned film is a pathetic excuse for Hollywood to say something no one wants to see/hear, I did get something wrong.

"And there is the benefit of appealing to women with the hint of the line

“If the Earth dies, you die. If you die, the Earth survives."

Such a hokey line and idea never was in the first film, but I’m sure it will garner positive reviews from women’s groups because she is so important to the world."

Wrong. The line is not meant about the one woman it is said to but about mankind in total. Of course I was placing the importance of that singular female character on a high category, which it was in the first film along with her son. But then again I am not an eco-fanatic nor am I a far-left Hollywood writer or movie studio exec. Films might be better if I were, or at least remakes I think.

The line in fact refers to the ecology of the Earth. We humans are destroying it and so some alien needs to come down and save our planet from us. Basically an alien version of Greenpeace and PETA mixed together without that much peace. Thank you Hollywood for giving us your political commentary yet again.

I also stated in my original preview

"The new film will likely lose all the nuance, and subtle political message of the original film. In fact I expect the film will make a political point like using a sledgehammer to open a sunflower seed."

Well a 25 foot tall robot could definitely be a sledgehammer. Or the plague of microbots and their erasive nature. But the point was correct. Be green or else is the only mission, plot and image this film wants to convey. Which is fine if you want to be at an Al Gore rally. But when I spend $9 just to get a ticket, and give up 2 hours of my life, I prefer to be entertained.

Film has long ago given messages in the stories that it presents. For America, most of the films that were solely focused on this were called B-films, and were laughable. Today we see a Hollywood that could make Ed Wood proud. Hollywood gives us over the top, often CGI enhanced, massively budgeted, political commentary in the guise of something we liked in the past and are lured in to see again. In essence we are just throwing away good money and time for a stump speech that does do more than annoy and infuriate because we were given a bait-n-switch flim-flam. [They could have just given the entire budget to Greenpeace, PETA, and various global warming groups and saved the planet their carbon emissions and wasting out time.]

I stand by my original postulation on The Day The Earth Stood Still. It will make some money because of the effects and the stars in the film (notably Keanu Reeves and Jaden Smith, not to mention Jennifer Connelly). But this will ultimately be a failure. It will fail to do justice to the original film, the original message, the writing, and the entertainment value we expect to receive for our money.

I don't think I can say it more bluntly.

Get the basics for your motorcycle ride

In the beginning of 2008, as gasoline prices jumped to $4 a gallon or more across the nation, tons of people gave up their SUV and bought motorcycles. People who never considered life on 2 wheels ran out to get a fuel-efficient chromed out bike. And most of these new riders had no idea what they were doing.

Now there is nothing wrong with owning a motorcycle. I rode for many years, and only had one accident - a drunk driver hitting me on a L.A. street. I loved the feel of the air on my face. The ability to see the road I was on. The rush of my bike (a 1972 Honda) as it thumped away as I started it up.

Riding a motorcycle is a freedom that many have learned is unlike any other means of transportation. And there are more than a few that understand this as a way of life. Just go to Sturgis and you will see what I mean.

But now there are drivers out there that are a danger to themselves and others on the road. They think it's about speed, or doing stupid tricks. They think they have to impress somebody just because they are on 2 wheels. Honestly they have just watched too many movies and cheap music videos.

What these new motorcycle converts need are lessons in driving. Take the extra money that is being saved from gas (even at these far lower prices now) and use it at a place like Skip Barber Superbike School Powered by KTM at the Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca. That is, when they open in 2009.

Why a school that is geared towards motorcycle racing? Well in my opinion it gets all that need for speed drivel out of their heads. You want to go fast, do it on a road built just for that. This way if you drop you don't take out school kids and crossing guards.

More importantly all these newbies will get to learn how to respect their bikes. They will learn to handle their bike, and how to pay attention to what is happening on the road.

Jeff Haney says it far better than me when he describes what he will be doing as instructor at Superbike School

"Even if it's not your goal to be a World Champion or race motorcycles, the understanding that allows World Champions to become consistent and successful (without falling down) is priceless to everyone who aspires to become a better, smarter and safer rider."

Now newbie riders don't need to go to Skip Barber. That's just an example I wanted to point out. The big picture is that as part of a far larger community of motorcycle riders there are things you need to know. For your safety and our own. And so we all can enjoy the ride.

I know too many riders that have been annoyed with the newbies already. I can only imagine what will happen when the economy improves again and oil surges back to far loftier prices again. So do everyone a favor, go to school. And for those that really need to do the dumb people tricks on their bike, read up on these items that you will likely need more than the rest of us - Motorcycle Airbags

Mountain bike and get a scholarship

With the recent troubles in the financial and credit markets, everyone has felt the impact. Whether its a union worker hoping to keep their job or a small business owner looking for a credit card to upgrade existing equipment. In fact the reach of the credit crisis has gone so far as to hit higher education.

Several institutions have restricted or ended their programs that were in place to provide new and returning college student with loans. This has increased the burden on these young adults at a time where few alternatives seem to be readily available. And even turning to mom and dad, the ultimate source of most college funding, is not an option in this environment.

But there are some options that still exist. One of those options has just been created by Milligan College in Tennessee. For the new students entering the college in the fall 2009 semester, a scholarship will be available that never existed before. The scholarship is based in athletics, but unlike traditional sports this new scholarship is based in an extreme sport that the youth of the nation can more readily connect with.

Mountain Biking.

Yes, this is the first scholarship I am aware of that is solely based on mountain biking. It is part of an effort at Milligan College to compete in the Southeastern Collegiate Cycling Conference. There are 4 events that involve mountain biking directly:

    cross country
    short track cross country
    dual slalom
    downhill

Obviously Milligan wants to have their college make a name in this growing sport. And for the graduates of the class of 2009 there is the opportunity to ensure they have an entry into higher academics. Overall this is a win-win for all involved.

When you consider the cost of a college tuition, which at Milligan is $25,650 up 13% from just 2006, every dollar is important. With financials unable or unwilling to meet their obligations, and new loans becoming scarcer I think what Milligan is doing is a big deal. And the fact that this is a scholarship based on a healthy sport is a big bonus.

So if you are in high school, a scholarship might make the difference for you. and you are good at competitive mountain biking, now you know. Good luck.

Literature and the internet could have beat Hitler

The Nobel prize is an accomplishment of great order and a source of pride for any winner. Often an entire lifetime of work is summed up in this one award. And there is no question that colleagues respect those that have won.

For those of us in the general populace the Nobel Prize is beyond our expectations. Most of us do not work in various fields of science and mathematics that many past winners like Albert Einstein and such delve into. But in the area of literature we all can dream of witting that one, or several, novels that capture the essence of life and imagination. Thus many of those that have won for literature are well known to us all, or become so.

But this year, as has happened in many years past, the winner of the Nobel for Literature - Jean-Marie Gustave Le Clezio of France - has taken that dream of the populace and added something different. He postulated that perhaps, if the internet had existed in the time of Hitler in the 1930's, he might not have been able to do what he did.

Now this has of course drawn criticism of all sorts. I even read one article where many modern day despots and such ilk were discussed and shown to be without concern for the internet. So it is true that the internet by itself is not an answer. And that is the key.

Like writing fiction, life requires imagination. And it is the imagination of say the blogosphere that can ignite the inspiration required to buck trends and question authority. While it may not be possible in North Korea, or China, where the internet is censored and restricted to high levels it is possible in many free nations. And once that inspiration takes hold it filters to the rest of the world.

Maybe Hitler would have been denounced and ridiculed enough to prevent him from gaining an audience. Perhaps his faulty logic could have been laid bare by the comments and attention to detail the internet can provide. Perhaps it could have been as simple as a Youtube video of a gaff that could have dashed his hopes. Maybe not.

But it is the thought that it might have that is important. Because if it might have in the past, it could in the future. And that is the point I think Jean-Marie Gustave Le Clezio was trying to make. That if we can inspire it, and discuss it, it is possible.

The internet allows for the breaking of every barrier that has existed for millennia. Borders, language, trade differences, religion, and nationalism are all useless. And if we can have the imagination we can spark inspiration. Just like writing does and can do.

And I for one, if I understand this Nobel winner correctly, like that idea. Whether or not it would have worked in the past I can imagine it. And that can inspire us all for a better future.

Michael Jackson sells, will R Kelly buy?

The party is over, and nothing says that more than the gates at Neverland Ranch being put up for auction. At least parents will not have to worry about their kids, or at least just a smidge less than before.

Auction you might ask? Yes, the former King of Pop, Michael Jackson has announced that he is having the yardsale of the year (perhaps decade). Over 2000 items will be up for grabs in 2009, including the gloved one's Billie Jean sparkling glove. And the whole thing will be shown on television, with bids accepted both in person and via phone. And to help with the garage sale, some unstated portion of the proceeds will go to MusiCares, a charitable organization that helps musicians in need. [And if I were a musician in need I still would not accept money from Jackson.] The real question though is if anyone will buy.

Besides the fact that 2009 will be a horrible year considering the reported plans of Democrats and President Obama for the economy, there is the fact that Michael Jackson is creepy. He may not be the most famous pedophile in the world, but he does a damn good job of looking like it. And that has hit his pocket.

At 50 years of age the crooner with a voice only eunuchs might emulate might be expected to continue enjoying his past fame and wealth. But it seems that he spent like a king and not an entertainer with bad publicity problems. Thus he has lost his ranch, had to settle a lawsuit, paid unknown amounts to parents of children that visited his private rooms, and who knows what lifestyle the kids he has live under.

Am I a fan of Jackson? Not really since the mid-80's. The absurdity that was his life, and then his maturation to pedophilia (allegedly) just ended it for me. And besides, why be a fan of his when his sister, Janet, is hot, talented, and far less damaged.

So I am not sad to see his possessions sold off to the highest bidder. Nor am I thrilled to learn that he plans to get back into the studio at some point and create another album. I think he will learn that times have changed. The public may accept a lot of things from entertainers - drug use, multiple jail sentences, divorces almost before the wedding, even a degree of bad parenting - but pedophilia is a line in every nation.

Still there is a silver lining in the cards for him. R Kelly hasn't had any records in some time, and he relatively recently beat a pedophilia charge (delayed some 5 years through lawyers). They could do a duet album, dedicated to all the children of the world. That line just creeped me out.

Neverland will never be again. R Kelly though should be up front and center at the auction, supporting his own. And that might just give the fans that don't care about what these apparently lecherous and vile men do to children something to smile about.

Opera faces challenge in economic downturn

When the news blares on about the current state of the economy you hear about the financial institutions, the auto industry, credit cards, airlines and of course homes. In fact over the past 3 months you have probably heard about how the credit crunch and/or the mortgage crisis will affect your life in a multitude of ways.

But what you really haven't heard is how it's going to affect your recreation and personal downtime. I'm not talking about holiday gift sales, I mean just enjoying yourself because you deserve it. This economic downturn is hitting us all in one of the most critical parts of any society, the arts and culture.

The Baltimore Opera Company has filed bankruptcy under Chapter 11 on Monday with 2 popular operas that were planned canceled. Porgy and Bess, and the Barber of Seville are common and usually profitable ventures for many operas, so to see the carpet ripped from under them makes a strong statement about the state of things these days. Especially since 3 operas planned for 2009 have also been canceled.

Baltimore Opera is a 58 year old company with a modest $6 million budget. They are hardly importing marble or gold for their productions. Yet the bite of the economy is causing a restructuring that bode ill not just for this one company, but is a sign for all to watch. Just like Opera Pacific did when it closed its doors in November.

But all hope is not lost. There are still some organizations that realize that the arts are too precious to lose altogether. In Atlanta one example came from the Goizueta Foundation, created by the late Coca-Cola CEO Roberto Goizueta in 1992.

The Atlanta Opera, like Baltimore, is a small company with a budget of $6 million as well. But sales have been down. The Goizueta Foundation grant of $1.5 million over 3 years is a major shot in the arm, giving the company time to endure the economic downturn causing this draught in the arts.

The key here is that the arts are too valuable to lose, especially to something as hit or miss as economic prosperity. Some things are priceless because the value should never be attached to it. The arts, and opera, are pare of that priceless essence societies need to have. Without it, history has shown, all great civilizations end. And a booming economy won't prevent that.

List of 25 thoughts on 2008 in review

In a year where the general mantra was change, 2008 lived up to the hype. Yes it's time to look back at the year and reflect on what surprised us, amazed us, disappointed, and angered. Here are some of the best and worst that I have noted about the year.

  • 1. Senator Obama wins the Presidency - After facing rampant rumors and internet smear emails about his race, religion and plans for the nation, not to mention direct insults and racial attacks from the campaign of his now proposed Secretary of State, Senator Obama defied all the pundits and pollsters. With almost 10% of the nation admitting they would never vote for a Presidential candidate that was not White, and a mere 40 years after the Civil Rights Movement, Senator Obama broke through one of the highest and hardest glass ceilings in the nation. Many never expected to see the day a Black man became President. Nothing else could take first place in this year.

  • 2. Amy Winehouse - She is still alive. I am incredibly amazed. She has been in more rehab and hospitals than Britney Spears, and that says a lot this year. I am sure there were odds in Vegas running almost 50/50 on her dying this year. It is merely the miracle of the human body in youth that seems to keep her going, not that she isn't pushing the limits.

  • 3. The mortgage crisis - It started the year depressing the financial industry, raising up gold and commodities, and took out Bear Stearns. This of course gave us the quick action of Treasury Secretary Paulson, Barney Frank, and Fed chairman Bernanke. Thus it got much worse. As oil peaked at $160/barrel, gold topped $1100, mortgage foreclosures hit all-time highs, and home prices dropped across the nation the overseers just mentioned promised more action and the security of our institutions. Then Freddie Mac and Fannie Mac failed on cue. And as the scramble to fix the fix became more important it became an election issue. But not before we were told the sky was about to fall; it didn't but the stock market did. This then became...

  • 4. The credit crisis - Money for everyone got scarce. New home purchases bogged down as banks said no to even highly qualified borrowers. Big businesses couldn't get loans, including Mc Donald's. The stock market continued down in a crash not seen in 2 generations. Banks failed at an unprecedented rate, brokerages became banks to get in on a bailout that HAD to happen. And the Government scooped up positions in private business, for our good, as they poured a trillion dollars into the economy. Which still has not stopped the overall downturn in the economy.

  • 5. Heath Ledger, Bernie Mac, Isaac Hayes, Buddy Dial, Jerry Groom, Janet Kagan, John Bliss, Julian Rathbone, Mike Smith, William F. Buckley, Jr., David Edwards, Buddy Miles, Genoa Keawe, Larry Norman, Richard Baer, Eagle Day, Dennis Letts, Stephen Marlowe, Steve Whitaker, Ben Chapman, Robin Moore, Bobby Lee Trammell, Jim Jones, Benigno G. Tabora, Jerry Karl, Bobby Lord, Johnny Weaver, Thurlow Cooper, Perry Lopez, Lionel Mark Smith, Roger Voisin, John Brunious, Preston Hanson, Freddie Bell, Steve Gerber, Roy Scheider, Robert DoQui, John Alvin, John Grimsley, Schoolboy Cleve, Kenny Konz, Winston Walls, Ken Hunt, Christopher Allport, Lance Clemons, Suzanne Pleshette, Bobby Fischer, Ernie Holmes, Allan Melvin, Brad Renfro, Johnny Grant, Brandi Borr, O.G. Style, Sean Levert, Heath Benedict, Chalmers Alford, Richard Widmark, Al Hofmann, Wayne Davis, G. David Low, Martin Fierro, Rafael Tufiño, Chuck Day, Gary Gygax, Ivan Caesar, Will Robinson, Paul Davis, Al Wilson, Orish Grinstead, VL Mike, John Marzano, Danny Federici, Sean Costello, Stanley Kamel, James Barrier, Gib Shanley, Charlton Heston, Ray Poole, Harvey Korman, Sydney Pollack, Tom McHale, Mitch Mullany, Camu Tao, Dick Martin, Michelle Meldrum, Zelma Henderson, Lloyd Moore, John Phillip Law, Heather Stohler, Dick Sutcliffe, Curtis Whitley, Eddy Arnold, Mildred Loving, Jim Hager, Don S. Davis, Dave Carpenter, Charles Dryden, John Furlong, George Carlin, Scott Kalitta, Mel Agee, Johnathan Goddard, Stan Winston, Mitch Frerotte, Jim McKay, Robert J. Anderson, Bo Diddley, Mel Ferrer, Luther Davis, Bruce Adler, Michael J. Daly, Joe Beck, Estelle Getty, Anastasia Blue, Paul Sorensen, Sherman Maxwell, Luke Kruytbosch, Bobby Murcer, Terrence Kiel, Larry Harmon, Phil Hill, Ed Vega, Kevin Duckworth, Steve Foley, Frank Cornish, Jeff MacKay, Jerry Finn, Julius Carry, LeRoi Moore, Pervis Jackson, Jack Kamen, Gary Mooney, Fujio Akatsuka, Paul Newman, Nappy Brown, Norman Whitfield, Joan Winston, Joey Giardello, Bill Meléndez, John Ripley, Estelle Reiner, Merl Saunders, Richard Blackwell, Dave McKenna, Chris Mims, Kevin Foster, Gidget Gein, DeWayne McKinney, Johnny "J", Robert Arthur, Doris Dungey, Derek Scott, MC Breed, Abraham Woods, Michael Crichton, Chris Thurston, Nathaniel Mayer, Tiffany Sloan, Shakir Stewart, Paul Benedict, Donna Stewart-Hardaway, Steve Bradley, Jimmy Anderson.

All passed away in 2008. Only Heath Ledger has been spoken about in any lasting and referential way.

  • 6. The Shield ended is run on cable television. And so has The Riches in a move of network television cowardice (in my opinion). Leaving a serious void of realistic and/or quality programming.

  • 7. American Idol continues to be on television. Creating a lasting void in the minds of viewers.

  • 8. Top movies of the year starts with Batman: The Dark Knight. Which proves that hype and bad writing can make money. This is followed by Iron Man (a massively better movie), Indiana Jones 4, Hancock, Wall-E, Kung Fu Panda, Madagascar 2, Horton Hears a Who, Sex in the City, and Quantum of Solace.

Considering the top 10 grossing films, you would think the nation loves kid films that are animated or movies based on long-running comic book characters. The exception being sluts and a guy with an accent and lots of violence. And you would be right.

  • 9. The continuous flood of television shows that were successful (and better) on the BBC, that have now been Americanized and appear on U.S. channels (notably NBC). Generally these converted shows fail within a few episodes.

  • 10. The massive blogosphere controversy over Ben Stiller's film Tropic Thunder failed to ignite onto the streets when the film came out in theaters. This is likely due to the failure of the film as anything watchable. But the controversy continues to this day.

  • 11. The massive number of films that are 'revisioned' copies of comic books, television shows, and books astounds the mind. 70 % of the top 10 movies are either a sequel, comic book conversion, television show and/or a combination of these. The sheer number of copies for the entire year is to high to count, especially if you add in video game conversions to the mix. Witting in Hollywood seems to be completely dead.

  • 12. The absolute joy of the media and many White Americans at the thought, and then celebration of the OJ Simpson Las Vegas trial and conviction. Never mind the dubious nature of how the crime was setup, nor the quirky way the trial went. It could only be justice if OJ went to jail for a long time, which was a given the day he was arrested. Not to mention the guy where justice just evaporated and the media just passed it over.

  • 13. The unmitigated bias and propaganda of the news media in promoting President-elect Obama throughout the election cycle. Never before has the media so blatantly given up its obligation to provide the truth without bias to the public. It wasn't yellow journalism, but it wasn't beneficial either.

  • 14. The amazement of how the media continues to depict video games as inciting violence in children, while playing down events like the collapse of a boy because his father could not bother to check in on him for 20 hours. It's not the games any more than it's music or movies or cartoons. It's the lack of parents doing their jobs.

  • 15. The belief of some that racism has ended because President-elect Obama won. This flies in the face of police actions this year, stereotypes in the media, events in the nation, and long-held views that were reflected in polls. Or did we forget Lindsey Lohan already (which is understandable).

  • 16. Guns n' Roses Chinese Democracy finally made it out to fans. Considering it took well over a decade to get done you might have expected it to be a masterpiece - it isn't. Still it did get it's share of media attention mostly due to Dr. Pepper.

  • 17. Hanoi Jane Fonda announced she is again trying to forget what she did in the past.

  • 18. Even amid all the economic chaos many continued to make charitable donations. Some from the most unexpected sources. And sometimes the media just wants to throw garbage at such actions. Still giving is a great thing and especially in these difficult times.

  • 19. Internet scams continue to be on the internet, and many are gaining steam. From fake IRS stimulus checks to going after the grandparents little is left to chance. Considering the information on the net you would expect these frauds to fail completely. Yet they are still out their. And more than a few are snake oil salesmen that do to well with incredible claims that only harm those they claim to help.

  • 20. We all continue to remember Sept 11, 2001. And I hope we never forget or diminish what happened that day. Or how we came together as a nation in the weeks afterward.

  • 21. The Olympics were a time of great unity in the world. And at the same time some nation chose this moment to show how backwards they can still be in the 21st century.

  • 22. And the media continued to seek out ways to portray African Americans as poorly as possible. While at the same time ignoring the obvious racially motivated actions of institutions against Blacks.

  • 23. Several black celebrities were able to get some extra media this year though. Some were for accidents that occurred (and the media sought to mine controversy out of tragedy). Some were for their rising stars as they continued to gain acclaim they deserved. And a few were just selling out just a bit more before their media inspired hype ends.

  • 24. We had a moment where the Government almost did something important. But instead settled for something notable and that went unreported. Because how important could an apology for slavery really be? Besides important enough that no one wanted their names on it, yea or nea.

  • 25. There were many cotroversies throughout the year. Some for silly items and some were quite serious.

  • 26. And along the way some learned a few new things about this nation that they never knew before.

  • These are just some of the things in the year that I noticed. I am sure I missed a few things, or had an interpertation some disagreed with. There were events I didn't mention, or didn't convey in this list. And I really haven't mentioned one thing that I find personally quite important.

One of the most important things in 2008 was the continued and growing attention you my visitors have provided to my blogs and sites. Without the attention and input from all your voices in over 125 nations each month, I would be working in vain. And for that I want to thank you.

I continue my promise to let you know my thoughts on issues and events that I believe are important, and sometimes just silly, that catch my eye. I will work hard to respond to each comment and email that comes from you. I will endeavour to provide the quality of writing and attention to detail you have come to expect.

2008 has been a good year for the growth of my blogs and sites, but I realize that it only happens because of you.

So I end this review of 2008 with this thought. No matter the economic environment, the events of the day, we all can achieve success if we work hard and maintain a high level of quality. You have proven that for me, and if I can do it I am sure you my readers can do even more.

President Obama commemorative coins - historic yes, investment no

Speaking on the subject of gift ideas for the holiday season [if you haven't been to my online store yet you should check it out] there is the question of the President Obama commemorative items that are for sale now.

I have heard that newspapers announcing the win of President Obama can be found on eBay selling for hundreds of dollars each. And there was no delay in commemorative plates and coins and other items to hit the airwaves since the election. You undoubtedly have seen at least one of them, like this from the New England Mint

Note that the key words in this ad are UNCIRCULATED. That is because they are not sanctioned by the U.S. Government. In fact they are not legal tender (no currency of the United States may bear the likeness of a living President by law). Thus they have NO VALUE.

Now I am not saying that the election of President Obama is not historic. Nor am I saying that in time these items might gain value. But I am definitely saying that the $30 or $50 dollar value that the commercials postulate is arbitrary and a sales gimmick. The true value, in my opinion, is the price you purchase this for - if not less.

Like most collectibles, especially coins, the value comes with time and rarity. Adding to that value is the official use of the coins. A silver penny has a value because it was real, was in use, is now rare, and is old. These commemorative coins are none of these things. Even 30 years from today they may not gain value, or even in 150 years.

That is not to say that there is no symbolic or sentimental value. I know that my mother wants one of these coins, just because it is something in history she never expected to live to see. So in a way for her this is priceless. And there are millions of other African Americans that feel exactly the same way. So a $10 gift is worth far more to her.

But for those that wish to buy these coins with the hope of an alternative investment, don't get excited. You will likely never sell these coins for more, or even as much, as you paid for them. A purchase beyond your desire to have a symbol of an historic moment in our nation is a waste of money.

Just keep that in mind as you watch these commercials and the holiday season goes on.

Jazz gift idea - The Jazz Ear

It's the holiday season and everyone is searching for the perfect gift for everyone on their list. Considering that I decided to see what might be of interest out there for Jazz music enthusiasts. But I also wanted to see if I could find something that was a bit different than a favorite album or video of a favored artist. So I went to books, which to me often encompass the innovation that is Jazz music.

To that end I have seen nothing but positive reviews for The Jazz Ear by Ben Ratliff. Mr. Ratliff has been reviewing jazz for the New York Times for some 10 or so years now, so yu would expect a respectful and knowledgeable book. But this is different.

Unlike books that interview various artists about their inspirations and motivations, Ratliff sought a different path. To understand the artists via the music that they listen to and to discuss that. In such a manner we get more of the soul of the artists, in a more relaxed manner than traditional interviews might provide.

As I stated the book is held to be an accomplishment worthy of the subject matter and those involved.

The book has been on sale for a while now, and can be found among numerous online retailers. The cost is hardly prohibitive for the hardcopy, even in this economy. And I think this is something that any jazz enthusiast might find enjoyable. Perhaps even taking the time to sit back and listen to the songs that are selected by the musicians interviewed even before reading their thoughts.

Interviewees include Sonny Rollins, Ornette Coleman, Branford Marsalis, Dianne Reeves, Wayne Shorter, Joshua Redman, Pat Methany and more.

For an original gift idea I think you could do far worse, and this will likely bring the smile you were hoping for.

School teaches about slavery by binding Black children

Over my 40 years I heard of many things teachers have done to teach kids. Some are great ideas, some are bad, and occasionally some create unexpected results like The Wave. But I am still trying to learn what gave a teacher the thought that binding Black children to explain slavery was a good idea.

The teacher was of course White. I say that because only someone who has no direct attachment to the concept of slavery would be so oblivious to the social and personal impact such an act would create. That does not mean the teacher is racist or mean-spirited. I only mean to say they had no idea what this action would mean.

This happened in a 7th grade class, in Haverstraw Middle School, to 2 Black girls about the age of 13. The girls were singled out, but were not the only Black children in the class, had their hands and feet bound with tape, and then told to crawl under a desk to simulate being shipped as slaves across the sea.

There are too many problems with this.

First why couldn't a mix of children be used for this example? Why not a couple of White kids? Why did they have to be Black.

What teacher has a right to bind any child? I doubt there is any reason for such an action. And if the children were white I imagine an outrage among the community that would have reached the airwaves - which this did not.

Once bound why did the children need to be further humiliated by being made to crawl. That could easily be seen as humiliating even without bound hands and feet. Adding to that is the exclusion that occured. Why didn't the teacher give every child a chance to crawl so they all understood it from both views?

And of course there is nothing happening over this. The teacher still has a job and was teaching class. The Superintendent is brushing this off as a class exercise that went wrong - only because one of the girls became upset. And the major media has yet to cover this as far as I have seen.

This happened on November 18th, reported on Friday. A google search barely shows the media, or internet, having paid any attention. It's being ignored and forgotten by the media as I speak. But just imagine if this were 2 White girls and a Black teacher. Imagine the attention then.

The NAACP and one of the girls mothers are outraged. They have asked for action. The teacher has apoligized because one of the girls was upset, not for the actions taken. And I have to ask what if it was your kid?

Maybe when a teacher decides to help kids learn about the Holocaust by asking a couple of Jewish kids to come to the front of the class so they can have numbers written on them in pen and then kneel in a corner of the room facing a wall as eraser chalk is poured on them someone will notice. And the excuse that this is a lesson about the death chambers will be useless, and the entire event will be seen for the tasteless crass insult that this was. Or maybe it will be Asian children and the intenment camps in America. Or Native Indians about how the troops infected them with diseases. And on and on.

Maybe then we will see a reaction that matches the actions. Because the reation in that community now is that

"Parents said they were aware of the incident but few wanted to talk about it."

Sounds just like the national position on slavery in general. And it pisses me off.

If you would like to let Haverstraw Middle School hear your thoughts about this event, this insult, I have found the contact information. You can reach the school at

Haverstraw Middle School , 16 Grant Street , Haverstraw, NY 10927
    Phone: 845-942-3400 | Fax: 845-942-3403

Leverage on BBC, I mean TNT network

Another new program on TNT tonight was the new series Leverage. The show is a drama action mix. And it is essentially a copy of a British program that covers exactly the same ground.

Yes, Hollywood writers have proven themselves to be consistent and clueless yet again. The concept of originality has gone out the window. Because the name of the program this American version copies is called Hustle.

Yes it is almost exactly the same. Conmen (and women) with various specialities work together to take on bad people with lots of money and minor morality. Take out the accents, change the locations, replace a man with a woman, and make the leader an ex-lawman with a heart of gold and a need for a rush and you have Leverage.

That all said about the lack of originality, the question is if this copy is like Life On Mars and The Office, or like Coupling. And in each of these I mean the American remake of the BBC hit television series. Well from the first episode we get the answer of The Office.

Timothy Hutton is interesting as the cop gone bad for a good reason. Revenge for his son that died because of insurance company greed. This character is pivotal in not making this a 'crime is good' show. And he is believable as the guy in charge and trying to manage the greatest good.

And a tip of the hat to 2 key members of the cast.

Gina Bellman plays Sophie. Bellman is know best to most US and UK viewers for her work in the hit series Coupling (British version). Her work in Leverage is not too far from her role as Jane. She is a grifter that uses her sex appeal to make the con work. Obviously producers realized they should give some kind of attention to the fact they were ripping of BBC yet again, and she adds a nice flair to the program.

Christian Kane is back on American series work. Fans of the show Angel will remember him as the ambitious evil lawyer (is there another kind) Lindsey McDonald. Since the end of Angel he hasn't been seen much, but he fills in the morally ambigous nature that Leverage needs. And he does tend to fit the muscle man role well too.

Beyond that the cast is mostly unnotable. In fact It is highly likely that this series will fail after a season or 2. The problem I see is 3-fold, and not the fault of the actors.

The first problem will be the writers. Hollywood these days is uninspired and lazy. As such it is highly likely that scripts from Hustle will be reworked for American audiences. And as consistent with such copies, the translation rarely works.

The second issue is that since there are 2 women and 3 men there must be a love interest in the show. Already we have seen in the premiere that Timothy Hutton and Gina Bellman have a dubious past. That will likely need to be expanded on, and old-flames will rekindle. To the detriment of the show. Any other pairing will also likely detract from the ongoing theme of the series (expect that other paring to be the other female and Kane).

The last problem will very likely be cost of locations. Since this is an American show that targets rich and greedy Americans they will have to travel to spots known for the rich and greedy. That means shooting in L.A., New York, Miami, Las Vegas and a few other mmajor cities (D.C. is sure to be on the list). That means big money. And unless the show is a blowout hit, which I think unlikely, they can't afford that.

So many of the locations will be highly generalized. And that will detract from the appeal of the show. Not that the cast, and in this case the writers, can do anything about that. You just can't write away glitz that is expected to be seen.

I hope the series does develop into something good. I like most of the cast, and the original show was quite good. I just fear the ability of Hollywood writers today. We shall see if Tuesdays regular timeslot episode will match up to the high bar that Sunday's premiere created.

The Librarian: Quest for the Judas Chalice

So tonight was the 3rd installment of the Librarian series on TNT Network. The series stars Noah Wyle as the titular character, essentially the foremost uber-nerd. His character is the vessel of facts both obscure and pertinant as documented throughout written history. And he is our vehicle to plumb the truth of many of the legends we have all heard of, to some degree.

The start of the program takes us through a very specific path through the prior 2 features. It focuses mainly on the first adventure, and the assistant to the Librarian Nicole. I found that interesting to note since the female lead in the 2nd feature was about as emaciated as fish after a cat has gotten thru with it. Seriously, all I could think about when that actress was on the screen was how anorexia is so pervasive and acceptable in Hollywood.

But focusing on this new story we find that our near hapless hero is stressed out. He can't keep a single girlfriend for more than 6 months, and its driving him mad. Or at least highly unfulfilled. And so he needs to take a vacation.

This program being what it is, the mystical and legendary take a strong role in what we learn of. Thus it is a vision of a woman calling for our hero that determines where he will vacation. And many is the guy (or woman) that wishes the person of their dreams would lead them on a vacation.

This then takes our adventure to New Orleans. The plot from this point takes it's cues from various Anne Rice and other similar pop culture on vampires.

The real question is if this entire television movie is worth the time to see it. And the answer is both yes and no. The majority of the program is enjoyable enough. Wyle is a good actor and his portrayal is humorous and likeable. At this point in the series though his character is both terribly naive and more than a bit gullible. You have to wonder, and as Bob Newhart's character notes, does he realize where he is work?

The location shots are nice. The plot is thin if not constantly in motion so as to hide the plot holes as much as possible. And the acting of all the other characters is par in general. Were this a movie in a theater it just wouldn't do, but for the small screen it's better than most offerings.

But the main problem the series has had is the casting of the female leads and love interest. For me I have to wonder why they have run from the attractive, interesting, and feminine Nicole character to generally women that look like they are suffering from starvation. Even the vampiress is woefully in need of a cheeseburger. For a woman that was born some 400 years ago, a time when only the poorest of peasant women were so thin, you wonder why a vampire would pick her as a victim.

Of course the series further developed the storyline of the purpose of the Librarian, the battle of good and evil it represents, and the boss of the librarian. This means that barring all the actresses in Hollywood going to a McDonald's and eating a burger - and thus being incapable of performing - there will be a 4th telemovie.

Perhaps in this next movie we will finally see the uber-geek get and keep a girl. Perhaps the Librarian will finally come to full terms with his job and the oddities that exist in the world. I mean he does practice swordsmanship with a floating self-aware Excaliber.

In all, I found Quest for the Judas Chalice to be a fair program. It was not on par with the first and marginally better than the second. IF the series further devolves it won't make it past a 4th. Which would be a shame as it has the potential to be a quasi-mystical geek version of James Bond. But if you see it on TNT and there isn't a copy of one of the Jason Bourne movies, or Die Hard, or so on take a look.

Vernon Palmer, Apostle Shada Mishe, whacko snake oil peddler

I hate it when a whacko uses my site to try to gain fame, fortune or both. Let me be clear.

I previously posted a story about the Levi's 501 jeans commercial that I felt promoted unprotected sex among youth, and thus promoted STD's and HIV/AIDS.

Today a wacko named Vernon Palmer, who now likes to go by the name Apostle Shada Mishe, placed a comment to that post boasting about his 'Cure for HIV/AIDS' (which has since been deleted). This cure was given to Vernon by God via the angel Gabriel in 2002. After an unknown amount of delay, Palmer eventually used this cure on an unnamed AIDS victim who then was 'cured' though he remained HIV positive. Palmer has gone on to make several Youtube videos and claims to have presented his 'cure' to dozens of agencies, doctors, institutions, and governments. Yet none are advocating his claim nor using it.

Did I forget to mention that this "God given cure" also cures HPV, Lupus and several other maladies?

In all the mumbo quasi-religious quasi-scientific jumbo that Palmer spouts, and posts on every blog he can find, he never mentions the name of anyone cured. He never mentions a single institution that was given this 'cure'. And across the internet there is not a single post or article from any source that validates a single word of the garbage Palmer is spouting. There are multiple items found that dispute every word though - Jamaican claims that he can cure AIDS with gift given to him by God, AMBUSH (CURE FOR AIDS!!!).

Why am I discussing this then? Because I do not want anyone to be fooled or conned by this madman. HIV/AIDS is a serious disease, and research into a cure should not be sidelined by fanatical crap that will only give false hope to victims.

Second I despise anyone that would seek to gain anything off of the backs of the sick, impaired, or uneducated. This is akin to Nazi's who profited by pulling the gold out of the mouths of concentration camp victims. Or collected insurance payments from Jews that were never paid out to the families. Or the other sick bastards on the net that promise cures for various ailments that only wind up sucking the money out of the banks of terminally ill patients.

Third, were this to have any credibility scientists and doctors across the world would be trying it just in case it did save lives. If this cured anyone, I cannot see how they might hesitate to get on every blog, news program, newspaper and so on across the world proclaiming the results.

Fourth, Vernon Palmer states himself that he delayed using this 'gift from God' given to him by an 'angel'. If he truely believed such a miracle happened, why would he offend God by ignoring it for even a moment? That's like God giving Moses the ten commandmnets and then leaving them on the mountain for a few weeks as he went on about his life.

Such frauds deserve to be hung by the genitals with piano wire. I have no pity or remorse for these charlatans.

M V Consulting, Inc does not believe in such frauds. We do not advocate any such lies and profiteering. We will vociferously denounce any such fool and show them for the cheap snake oil salesman they are.

AMBUSH, Vernon Palmer, Apostle Shada Mishe and whatever new name he or his product take on deserve to be thrown in a jail and forgotten. Don't be fooled and never give such a cretin a dime.

Heath Ledger will win an Oscar - who is surprised

Ah the Oscar rumours are starting to pour out. And in yet another year of generally poor movies the majority of films being selected are yet again probably those you have never heard before.

Though there is one exception this year. Batman: The Dark Knight. That film will get an Oscar nod. Everyone is sure of it. And Heath Ledger will win posthumously. Everyone is sure of that too.

Since the moment that Ledger was found dead, there has been nothing but hype about The Dark Knight, and his performance as the Joker. I believe I said at the time that he was sure to win, and that the movie will bring in tons of money. It seems this will happen.

But I continue to believe that the movie was horrible. I thought the Ledger Joker was the worst version I have ever seen. The animated Batman series has a better Joker, and that is a kids version.

But that will not stop the Oscars from handing him an award. He's dead and there was way too much hype. He has to get the award lest Hollywood be called an unsympathetic place for drug addicts. Well maybe Ledger was not an addict, though he did die from a drug overdose. Close enough.

But his personal problems are not what the awards should be about. It's about the acting. And while he was good in a role that was written horribly and directed without the dark manic humor that defines the character, it was hardly Oscar quality. But when you are in a desert and all you have is sand to drink.

Still there is hope. The Wrestler is still getting mostly rave reviews, Seven Pounds has yet to hit theaters and The Soloist has yet to be mentioned. But if there has to be an action film, based on a comic book that must win an Oscar for 2008 (because I believe 2009 will go to the Watchmen) then I would pick Iron Man. That was far superior to The Dark knight in all respects.

But since I'm not a member of the Academy, we will see.

Boycott 33 variations - Hanoi Jane Fonda

Some stars fade with time, some entertainers excel in their later years. Morgan Freeman didn't hit the A-list until after he was 50 years old. So it's no surprise that a celebrity is returning to the stage in 2009.

Except that this 'celebrity' is Jane Hanoi Fonda. After 40 years of exile from the stage, and slightly less time from movie screens, Hanoi Jane is returning to the stage to see if anyone remembers her actions during and since Viet Nam.

Well to be accurate, someone is betting that this traitor (in my opinion) still has fans somewhere and that they will see her perform. Obviously I am not one of those people. More likely I would be in front of the theater protesting and wishing for the play to fail.

The play is called 33 variations. It will be performed at the Eugene O'Neill Theatre from February 9th until May 24th. It is my sincere and ardent plea that none of my readers see it.

I do not like Hanoi Jane Fonda. I despise the actions she took in the 1970's that harmed American soldiers. I have never seen anything she has been in, and intend to stay that way until I die. My words and thoughts of Hanoi Jane are decidedly too graphic, dark, and vulgar for my blog - but I think you can understand what I would say in person.

I realize that Hanoi Jane apologized, 30 years after the fact, for her actions in Viet Nam. I also realize that she did this in a book as a means of gaining profit. I do not accept an apology decades after the fact where it is the means of soliciting a sale. That is not remorse. That is not sincere.

In the past decade there have been a couple of attempts by Hanoi Jane to re-enter Hollywood movies and the fame she once long ago enjoyed. Each movie she has been in over that period, and I believe in the last 30 years, has been a failure. The only exception I recall is the last film of her father, Henry Fonda, On Golden Pond. That film likely only succeeded due to his extreme age and death thereafter.

Hanoi Jane Fonda is a repugnant human being. I would happily pay a woman to hit her, in the face, with brass knuckles. I seriously don't like her, her performances, and her beliefs.

I feel bad for the other actors and actresses that have the sad obligation to perform with Hanoi Jane. I am sure many of them are good, and having this blot appear beside them sullies their abilities. I feel bad that I am asking for several people in front of and behind the stage to loose their jobs because of this woman. But that sadness is as nothing compared to the pain and suffering American men and women felt in this nation and in Viet Nam due to her actions.

If Hanoi Jane Fonda wants to make more movies or act on stage I suggest she go to an audience that likes her. North Viet Nam once welcomed her and I am sure they would do so again with open arms. Perhaps the Communists in Bejing would care to see 33 variations. And I'm sure Fidel and Raul Castro would force a packed house for anything she might do.

But here in America I say Hanoi Jane Fonda is an unwelcome eyesore. And I hope for the singularly worst reviews and absolute failure of this play while she performs in it.

Do let me know if you agree or not.

95 of the top 100 greatest movie characters

Oh the fight is on. It seems that British magazine Empire made a list of the top 100 movie characters ever. This of course could not go without dispute. and thus Yahoo had to throw in their 2 pennies with a list of the top 25.

And I think that both lists have some merit but forget quite a bit. And the order of the characters is just plain dumb. Empire has Tyler Durden (Fight Club) as Number 1, Yahoo goes with The Tramp (Charlie Chaplin's films). While the Tramp is a good choice I think it isn't the best.

So here is my entry into the foray. Without question I will be told I am wrong to varying degrees. But that is the nature of a top list.

1.Harvey (Harvey)- The number 1 spot has to go to the only character that is never seen or heard from, is spoken about in virtually every 3rd line, is the center of attention, and is loveable.

3.HAL-9000 (2001) the definition of paranoia and what happens without the 3 laws

Each of the characters in the above films stands out, and their loss is one that makes a vacuum. Though the roles are not always the biggest they are powerful.

Some might dispute the inanimate or anime characters. But that does not prevent the characters from being as real or influential as any other. Some may wonder about why there are so few women. The honest answer is that until relatively recently there just haven't been many roles written where women are prominent or have a truly standout role. Some might discount the characters that reflect real people. But these movies are not the actual person's life and still their characters are larger than life.

And why does my list stop where it does? Well how might you round out this list? What might you change?

Planning and precaution are critical for mountain climbing

Mountain climbing is a sport that is aptly called extreme. Far too often we hear of the tragedies that can occur on the mountains, whether in Africa or as close to home as California. Today is another day of caution and remembering that even the most experienced climbers can fall prey to accidents.

Chichiro "Cherry" Enoki was an Emmy-nominated 33 year old TV editor. She was in California to climb Mount Shasta on Friday when she slipped and fell to her death. We give our condolences to her family.

Enoki was no novice hiker lost in the woods, or ill prepared for the Icy mountain face and 100 mph winds. Yet she too lost against the mountain. It is a sobering thought, and one I hope that inspires forethought and preparation. While that is not always enough, it can help.

And preparation can take many forms. Recently in Majorca, Martin Stone realized how it can save your life. He had climbed a peak of only 3,615 feet when we started to descend. The problem was he was alone and he got lost. Rather than panic Stone used his cell phone to send a text to his wife in England.

She alerted authorities that themn went on a search for him. They found his car but not his planned route. But Stone was wearing a bright red scarf, which allowed helicopters to identify him and save him.

In addition to the scarf and cell phone, Stone who is 62, also was wearing a thick heavy coat and mountineering boots, which authorities believe helped to save his life. Prior to the rescue Stone endured a night on the mountain in freezing temperatures and a hail and sleet storm.

Were it not for the precautions he did take, Stone would have likely died.

Can climbers make ascents and have accidents. Of Course. And can a climber fail to take every precaution? We are all human. But the more precaution and planning the better you increase your odds of survival.

At least that is what I take from these 2 recent news stories.

    Movie Review: Transporter 3

    $1.25 for gas
$20 for tickets to movie theater
    2 hours of your life

    "Are look upset?

But let me tell you why." - From the Birdcage

That I think aptly describes the experience of going to see Transporter 3. That isn't to say this was a bad film. It is to say that I should have waited for the DVD. Because the film is disappointing.

The Transporter series of films have come to make a few things expected. Great car driving, a couple of 5 or more on 1 fight scenes, Jason Statham changing his suits (and thus shirtless for the ladies in the audience), and explosions of large order. These are all very good things in a action film, which the latest does have. yet you feel somehow jilted by the end of the film.

The pace of the film is far slower in the feeling than the other prior movies. While the Audi has another staring role it seem to be held back from what you'd really like to see happen. Often you are just sitting waiting for something to happen. And you just never get a good payoff.

Part of the problem is the writing. And action fans are probably saying "what does that mean?" Action films are not known for their plots. Usually there are plot holes big enough to crash Mac trucks in. But the Transporter series has tended to be better than average in making it all make sense. Until this film.

Early in the film we are left with a big issue. Somehow our female lead is inexplicably asleep until a gentle touch from our hero. At this point one sorry soul has already failed to say 2 words that would have ensured his life. He said 4 or 5 other things, that make no sense to anyone out of the loop. But literally 2 words could have just kept him alive. And the lady also wastes time, and is highly insensitive to the situation, in cluing in Frank Martin (Jason Statham).

Later when Frank has ample time and opportunity to find out what is going on, the lady yet again is about as helpful as acid on your tongue (don't try it, it's just a bad idea). Had she been even slightly helpful everything would have changed. But instead we plod along.

I should mention that the relationship that develops between Frank and this young woman is unbelievable in virtually every aspect. Her whole purpose in the film seems to be to provide a love story so female viewers had a reason to buy the DVD. I felt it was a complete waste of film and did nothing for the story.

The 2 big fight scenes were decent, but not the best. The first movie had the best I think. The car scenes only had 1 that was really cool, and again I think the first movie was far better on this score as well. And when it comes to unbelievable actions, this film beats the other 2 in spades. I dare Mythbusters to try this escape-from-the-lake scenario and bust it wide open.

If you noticed I kept getting disappointed by the film. That includes the final bad guy fight, which ends stupidly. Perhaps one of the most believable parts of the film is Frank fishing with the ever so Columbo-ish French officer that seems to be is detached sidekick now. And that is not saying much.

For all these problems the film is not terrible. It's a decent action film and there are dozens far worse. It's just that I went to the theater for this. At $9 a ticket (and the Regal Theater in Binghamton smells bad by the way) I tend to want more than ok. especially from a film series that has done better than that in the past.

Jason Statham didn't have much to work with in this film. He tried and is just under par with his previous performances as Frank Martin. The French officer is exactly what he has been in the past. And the Audi excels as a top-end vehicle of choice for movers of questionable goods.

The problem is, in the middle of the film when the key bad guy says

"I just realized I don't need the best driver for this job. Any sucker that can drive can do it."

The audience has to say, 'He's right.' And then you wonder why you are watching this film anywhere but in your living room.

    100 days for $100 dollars - advertisers

In honor of the 1000th post at Black Entertainment USA, and because of the holiday season and the current economic downturn I have decided to give a helping hand to advertisers. It is because of the confidence I have in the blogs of M V Consulting, and the quality they provide that I am willing to provide the following offer:

Any advertiser that wishes to have a text based or photo ad on a blog or site of M V Consulting, Inc. will gain the introductory price of $100 for 100 days.

There is no catch to this. There is no requirement for future commitments, there is no hidden fees. It's simply a $350 savings and an introductory offer.

I have that much faith in the performance of my blogs and sites that I believe any advertiser will be interested in continuing their ads after the 100 day period and renew under the price structure as seen at my advertising rates.

I am willing to do this because I feel that advertisers that would choose to reach my visitors need help in this environment. And I believe that quality goods and services are something that my readers will find useful.

Now I will not have spam and/or hordes of ads on my sites. Restrictions on the number of ads still exist. And ads will need to be approved for content and quality. I will not ruin the sites just for a quick buck. I've worked too hard for that.

Any advertiser that is interested in contacting me can reach me about any questions, payment options, and restrictions at the following: Contact me

The BEB blog, which is focused on entertainment news, sports, movie previews and reviews, television shows, and race relations issues in the media has been in existence for 3 years. In that time it has grown to be in the top .1% of blogs (out of the estimated 100 million+ in the world) with visitors from 125 nations every month.

This milestone places the entertainment blog alongside some of the largest blogs, many national newspapers, and beyond most magazines in terms of publication rates. In 3 years the blog has gone from an unknown to maintaining readership that exceeds many mid-sized city periodicals.

In achieving 1000 posts, BEB has solidified its position as a leading internet destination for entertainment news commentary. Visitors read about all aspects of entertainment and interact with commentary as only the blogosphere allows. Hundreds have shared their thoughts, confirming the stature of the blog.

Michael Vass, President of M V Consulting, Inc., stated,

"Having crossed the 1000th post threshold at Black Entertainment USA, and nearly clearing 2000 posts when you include our political blog, I must admit my pleasure. The most important thing though has been the input and readership of tens of thousands of visitors each month." Mr. Vass went on to say, "From across the globe, representing every walk of life and growing each month, the visitors to the blogs of the Company make it all worthwhile. And now advertisers are recognizing these achievements. It's a great feeling."

      4. The continued expansion of the clothing lines featured at the Company's online store
      5. Increased visitors to the Company's online store
      6. Success in gaining initial advertisers
      7. Donations to charitable organizations and events growth
      8. The purchase of new office spaces for the Company

Another milestone that has been achieved is the recognition of M V Consulting, Inc. President and primary author Michael Vass in the blogosphere. Mr. Vass has grown from obscurity to writing for the Company's blogs to currently being the primary and/or contributing author at over 100 blogs besides those of the Company.

Additional growth of the Company will be detailed in the annual announcement.

    Remember FAME

I wanna live forever, I want to learn how to fly.

If you know the next line in that song then you are a child of the 1980's like myself. For those that have bad memories or are unfamiliar the next line is Fame! as sung by Irene Cara. This was the titular song of the movie Fame! which later spawned a television series of the same name and featuring many of the movies cast. The film was an interesting mix of music and drama, a reflection of life in NYC and preparing for the arts.

One of the things I love about the film is the characters journeys. Learning about themselves, fighting their inner and outer demons. Dealing with the harsh realities of life. And learning to deal with other people that have widely different views.

It was one of the first films I recall to have an openly gay character, an interracial romance, discussing illiteracy, and honestly displaying the work those in the arts must go through just to see if they have a chance in the industry. It was brutally honest in the self-destruction that can overwhelm many. It was honest in the way so many fall before they can rise, and even those that do can crash and burn.

And I really enjoyed Bruno Martelli and the orchestra conductor. Their battle between electronic instrumentation and classical was brilliant. And perhaps the best part is when the old teacher proved he was not unaware of modern music or it's value as he played improv with the best of the younger students. [might have been in the television series but I think it was the movie]

Now I bring up this blast from my past because I have learned that the film is about to be "reinvented". That spells almost certain doom. There have been few remakes that have done well, and even fewer in recent years. And once the words reinvent or re-imagined enter the description you can take odds at how bad the crap will stink.

But this new film is not without it's merit. Unlike the first film that starred in virtually every role unknowns, this new film will star some big names. Kelsey Grammer, Charles S. Dutton, Bebe Neuwirth are all teachers, and Debbie Allen who was in the first film will return as Principal this time. So there is one difference. And that could be good or bad. Because the focus of the film is not the teachers but the students and their paths.

Kristy Flores, Paul Iacono, Paul McGill, Naturi Naughton and Kay Panabaker will be taking on the roles of the students. I am not familiar with them, but in looking up the photos there seems to be a lack of diversity that the original had.

Will the new FAME be like the new 90210, a void of real talent and a showcase of the superficiality that pervades television and movies today; especially those that feature younger audiences? It's hard to say yet. I can hope that it will not reflect that. I can hope that the new director and writers have seen the original movie and appreciate it. I can hope many things for this film. But we will see.
