Fright Night remake has interesting cast

If you were alive in 1985, or you are up late watching cable, you have seen Fright Night.
From 1985, it’s a somewhat comedic teen horror take on the vampire mythos. It’s similar in ways to The Lost Boys, and many films of the time. Still it’s a favorite of many, especially for the characters played by Stephen Geoffreys and Roddy McDowall. So much of an underground favorite that it joins the ever growing list of films being remade by Hollywood.
The new version will likely revision every aspect of the film. Expect more blood, more violence, and definitely more explicit sex. Given the current mood for vampire movies all hints of humor, intentional or not, will be removed from the film as well. Which could be a good thing, but more likely not.
The positives about this planned film are that Colin Farrell will be involved. He will be playing the role of the Vampire bad guy. In the first obvious change in the film Toni Collette will play a new character, a mom that falls under the spell of Farrell’s vampire. Anton Yelchin (who played Chekov in the Star Trek revisioning) will take on the role of the teen who knows the true of his neighbor, and no one will believe him.
It’s hard to say how this movie will work out. Colin Farrell needs a mainstream hit, it’s been a long time since he had one. Anton Yelchin has yet to really prove himself, though he has had roles in the hits Star Trek and Terminator Salvation. Toni Collette was great in Sixth Sense but has really not been a factor in major movies since. Add all that to a plot that will try to modernize the themes and visuals, something that Hollywood has been far to lazy to do successfully 8 out of 10 tries.
Since the main cast is still being signed, and at this point in the year, it is likely that movie trailers won’t appear before mid-to late- 2011. Expect the film out in 2012. A key indication of the success or not will be if the film gets a slot in the death bed of January, or if it gets a far more optimistic March or September/October launch date.
More when the trailer comes out.
