You don’t know what a Space Marine is? Take a look at this
Yes it does look impressive. Space Marines are part of the Warhammer 40,000 universe. A game system based on 28mm figurines that are assembled and painted by the players, and fought based on a set of rules by Games Workshop. It’s been around since 1987, and unlike most games or items they are advertised by word of mouth.
Video gamers might be a bit more familiar with the franchise as they have seen and played the successful video game spin-off the Dawn of War series. Which is a prelude to the long awaited Massively Multiplayer Online Game (MMO) based on Warhammer 40k. But the wait is almost over. During E3 (THE video game convention of what is new and cool) in June, Warhammer 40k MMO will be revealed for the first time.
How big is this? Well for those in the know it is huge. The game is so popular that a movie is being planned. Several dozen books have been published. There are several magazines dedicated to the game and it’s variants. It’s an underground hit that is mainstream and most don’t even know it.
Why is the game so popular? Well if you play the game you know. There is a rich and detailed history that provides a backstory of how Humanity has made it to they year 40,000. Technology has come to a standstill as we crossed the stars and settled on planets further away than currently dreamed. But in the dark reaches of space mankind has also found other races and beings. Most of which don’t like us.
That’s where the Space Marines come in. 8 foot tall, genetically altered, literally super-humans that have 1 purpose. To fulfill the goal of the Emperor of Man in protecting humanity from dangers internal and external. Think of the Hulk, with a brain, loaded with the very best in armor and weapons. [Yes I do play the game and play as Space Marines - are you really surprised?]
But don’t think that they are the only characters out there. There are Orks (the Hulk with even less of a brain, massive numbers, and really crude weapons), Eldar (Elves in space with lots of technology instead of magic) , Tyranids (the Alien species) , Necrons (think Terminators) , and more. it is this universe of species battling for supremacy that makes Warhammer 40k so interesting.
Will the E3 presentation of the Warhammer 40k MMO be all that was expected? Well the only firm thought we have to go on is that the MMO is not being designed to compete with World of Warcraft or any other MMO. It is being designed so that millions of subscribers are not needed for success. That could mean that more detail and more specialized gameplay will be available as compared to the huge amounts of generic gameplay found in most MMO that need huge numbers of subscribers. Which would be a bonus.
All answers will come in less than a month. Keep an eye out because a video is sure to hit the internet once it is revealed.
