World Cup: Argentina vs Greece – half time

By Michael Vass | June 22, 2010

Group B is about to be finalized and one thing is certain at half-time, Argentina will advance. That being said the real question is how Argentina will fare against a nation where their goal scoring is limitied.

As can be expected Argentina is dominating the ball. They have controlled the pace of play, kept Greece on the defensive, and had possession for some 70% of the game thus far. But they have not scored a goal even after 5 corner kicks and 5 shots on goal. Alot of the credit for the lack of score must be given to Greek goalkeeper #12 Alexandros Tzorvas.

But there also seems to be a flaw in the Argentine game. Counter -attacks. Greece has been almost effective on the counter-attack. Forward #7 Georgios Samaras is the key man and has been most effective from the left side of the field. There is the spot that Argentina must shore up if they are to prevent Greece from scoring. Of course Argentina’s goalkeeper #22 Sergio Romero, has been no slouch in keeping aware. He has been on top of the ball especially with Greece’s only corner kick of the half.

The key man of the match though has to be Argentina’s #10 Lionel Messi. He has been in on most of the drives that have attempted to score a goal including a shot on goal for himself (which resulted in one of the corner kicks). The next most dangerous player so far would be Forward #16 Sergio Agüero. He has made 2 shots on goal and has been highly effective from the right.

The real question is if Argentina, guaranteed a spot in the Round of 16, barring an act of God, is playing at 100% or holding back. Are they allowing some space and taking things easy, laying a trap for the Round of 16 and after? It’s a question that no one can say for sure at the moment. But it is definitely a plan that may be in effect.

Truly the only one’s under pressure at the moment is Greece. They need to win. They need goals. They are under pressure from Argentina and South Korea. All of this will weigh heavily on them as the second half starts, and their fate in the 2010 World Cup draws near.

Great match for Greece. Unfortuantely they didn’t get the match. However, Argentina did great. They diserved to get the match.
