Eureka – season 4 update
By Michael Vass | August 8, 2010
The big questions before the season were what was the Fargonator, and what was up with the 1940′s references. At this point we are all aware of exactly what that was about. But the questions that got answered only led to even bigger questions.
The fact that history has changed has had many ramifications. For all the good changes in the series, like the end of the relationship between Deputy (now GD Head of Security) Jo Lupo and Zane, there are the negative consequences, like Dr. Tevor Grant (played well by James Callis). Those changes are really building to a climax.
The biggest thing that I am expecting is the betrayal of Dr. Grant. As I expected before the start of the series, Dr. Grant is not what he seems. Given that he was an important, yet unknown, scientist. He was critical in the creation of Eureka. But the man had ambitions. Exemplified by his active manipulation to go to the future.
Now that Dr. Grant is in the future, his actions are questionable. He has a fascination with Forbes and the stock market. He is studying the past, which also is the job he has been given as a cover. And he is actively working on restoring the time bridge. The indication is that he is looking to go back in time, to amass wealth, and to become the greatest scientist ever.
Dr. Grant is in effect Gaius Baltar. A scientist with his own personal gain as his primary goal. A man who cannot be trusted, yet exudes charm and confidence. Perhaps the most dangerous man as his actions can have repercussions that would alter history.
Of course the rest of the 5 time travelers have not noticed the danger. Sherrif Carter is only just starting to get a gut feeling that something is amiss. Dr. Blake is too busy being charmed and distracted by her son’s changes. Jo Lupo is occupied with changing Zane (a bit stereotypical by the way). Fargo is far too bemused and bewildered with his position as head of GD. Henry is fearful and anxious of his unexpected wife. All this prevents notice of the reality that Dr. Grant does.
Where is all this leading to? Perhaps a cliff hanger that is both expected and problematic.
Allison will not want to return to a world where her son is hanicapped. Jo wants to return to the Zane that wants to marry her. Fargo will want to retain the power he finally has come to realize. Henry will be torn by the new love he has gained, and the love he lost twice.
The big challenges come with Sherrif Carter and Dr. Grant. Carter wants to balance the scales. To ensure the safety of his loved ones, and to restore the normalcy that passes for sanity in Eureka.
Dr. Grant will want to change everything. To gain the acclaim he never had, and the limited amount he lost due to his trvel in time. He wants fortune as has never existed. He wants to be what he otherwise could never have been.
The wild card is of course Kevin. The former Kevin that was linked, and may still be, to the Artifact. The Kevin that can possibly see the multiple timelines and the ramifications of all the events. A Kevin that wanted to provide his mother with a gift of life with a son who was “normal”.
Could the series season end be a massive multipart revisioning of say Back To The Future III? Would they dare mix episodes, playing multiple versions of each character, weaving into and out of the season opening start? And if they would take on such a huge project, what inevitably will change yet again?
Then again, what about the one character that we have yet to see in this new reality? Dr. Nathan Stark? Is he still dead? Does he still care for Dr. Allison Blake? Would he help or hinder our time travellers?
It shouldn’t take long to find out.
