Dr. River Song

By Michael Vass | August 9, 2010

Fans of Dr. Who know who this woman is. A mystery, a person on whom debate is worn like perfume. She is perhaps the best main character that only occassionally appears, to ever grace a televised series.

If you don’t watch Doctor Who, you are missing a great character, and an equally great portrayal by Alex Kingston. The character is powerful, confidant, mysterious, authoritative, filled with knowledge not even the other characters in the series possesses, and very likely a villian. That’s a lot, but there is one other aspect that makes this character unique. Like Merlin, we get to watch the character in reverse time.

That is to say that Dr. River Song first appeared in Dr. Who in 2 episodes (with the 10th and best Doctor) that culminated with her death.

But the series is abot time travel, and Dr. Song is a part of the future of the series as well as the past. As we continue forward, we get to see her again and again. Each time a bit earlier in her timeline and closer to her first meeting with the Doctor.

But why do we love her so?

Stylish yes? Well how about bad ass? When facing down one of the greatest foes of the universe, creatures feared by just about everything in the universe, Dr. Song makes a stand

Who is Dr. River Song? A Time Lord? The wife of the Doctor? His daughter Jenny? His granddaughter Sarah? The wife of The Master? An assassin that kills the Doctor? All of the above, or parts of them?

The debate is raging. But one thing is clear. Dr. River Song is the best and only reason to watch the 11th Doctor (Matt Smith version). And the answers on if she is a villian and/or the Doctor’s wife are about to become known.
