Burn Notice – 2010 summer finale
By Michael Vass | August 27, 2010
Burned spies, losing girlfriends, and secret organization in competition. Burn Notice has all of this, and a twist of schemes in schemes and a soft heart. Who knew.
Well actually we all do. The series really hasn’t deviated much from the initial premise, but has generally remained fresh overall. But this latest season the introduction of Jesse felt like the series had jumped the shark.
There was the lingering almost attraction between Jesse and Fiona. There was the constant tease with Vaughn as a new secret organization of bad guys was identified. And then the pace of things. It just wasn’t the same show. Good but different, and just out of snyc.
The season ending episode isn’t much different. The effort to save a kidnapped little girl feels like it’s been done before. The submarine was a nice tease in commercials, but a let down onscreen. The bad guys were pretty dumb, and incredibly trusting towards the end of the episode compared to the start.
Speaking of dumb, the new bad guy boss seems pretty dumb for a guy running a major international cartel. His security is compromised very easily at the start (given that they recover quickly). He allows himself to get into a trap with little protection (given that the trap goes sideways for everyone involved). He doesn’t match up well to former bosses or even Vaughn.
But the finale ends on an interesting note. Jesse looks like he takes the upper hand on everyone (he has the bible codex apparently). Barrett looks to be injured, but not dead (possibly). Vaughn is going to be pissed off, though he was still in the middle of a firefight.
Michael Weston is injured, badly. He has been shot and in a car crash. Barrett is not working alone so that’s one group after him. Vaugh and his friends will be upset that their identities are compromised, so another issue. His relationship with Fiona is stretched thin, possibly breaking due to her feelings for Jesse.
The big question is if Vaughn got to Jesse and turned him into an agent for him. That would be bad. Though good for the series. But that is unlikely. More probable is that he will try to use the information to get back into the Agency, taking down as many bad guys as possible.
Another question is how dark will Westen become. He has increasingly used more people, and harsher methods as the series has advanced. He has become more detached from friends and his mother. He is slowly turning into a kinpin of his own organization, with deep connections to criminals and police as well as the FBI.
Here is a thought. What if Michael, via the bible codex and the help (or even against the wishes) of Jesse, actually creates an orgaznization to take down Barrett and Vaughn’s organizations? What if he makes Fiona and Sam into operatives for him like those he has taken out so far in the series? What if he becomes exactly what he has been trying to destroy, because that is the only way to remove them?
Now that would be a twist. That would be a way to end the series completely.
Of course that is a fantasy. The writers in cable television are occasionally more creative than most in movies, but hardly this creative. The summer finale proved that.
Soon enough we will see Michael awake, caught in a web of his own creation, surrounded by enemies on all sides. Soon enough he will be out to help out those in need, yet keep the wolves at bay. But unless something serious changes the series will fade from the status it grew to.
