Paris Hilton and celebrity justice – once again
By Michael Vass | August 30, 2010
In the latest bout of disrespect of law or herself, Paris Hilton has again been arrested. The shock must be driving someone insane, likely a 12 year old on prozac.
For those that are unaware, which I wish could include me, Paris Hilton was in Las Vegas over the weekend. Her current boyfriend ran afoul of the law by smoking marijuana and driving – potentially endangering the public. Hilton, standing by the boyfriend at the time of his arrest, proceeded to go into her purse for reportedly lip balm, and dropped a package of cocaine (.8 grams worth).
This should be simple. She is guilty of a crime, was caught, and should face the penalty – up to 4 years on this felony count. But Paris Hilton has 2 things in her favor. She is apparently a blithering idiot, and she stands to inherit tens of billions of dollars.
The first item is not so much an asset but part of the excuse that Hilton has offered as her defense. Her initial claim was that after a night of partying she took the wrong purse with her – therefore the cocaine was not hers. A decent argument were it not for the fact that her DNA was on the lip balm that caused the realization of the crime, as well as her prescrition medication was also in the purse. Plus the fact that an heiress to so much fortune being without her own possession seems incredulous to consider. So much for a mistake.
This leads to the next excuse. Someone else must have placed the cocaine in her purse without her knowledge. Really? This is a billionairess, known to avoid the regular folks whenever a camera is not around. She has a cadre of people around her to ensure that she doesn’t mingle with just anyone. So those that are capable of doing what she has claimed are people she would be aware of using drugs. Which says nothing of her own past usage issues. Nor to the fact that possession is 9/10th of the law and any regular person in this situation would hardly get the benefits Paris Hilton’s bought fame provides her.
While the second might hold some credibility, it is far less likely given that the first excuse was to try to deny it was her purse. Credibility like acting is not something that Hilton has in abundance (if at all). Let us not forget that she visited prison because she was not capable enough to read court documents preventing her from driving. At least she said she was not capable, and argument that she feels her wealth makes her above the law is just as reasonable.
Overall one thing is clear. Paris Hilton has no respect for the law. It is something that her breif visit in jail failed to impress on her – as was expected considering the nature of that fiasco. But it is time she learned that being an heiress does not somehow barricade her from the law of the land.
If this seems like I have no respect for the talentless and generally useless Hilton, its because I don’t. There is no reason to have any.
But the courts really need to do something. Often celebrities are treated with the kindest of hands when the law is broken. Celebrities tend to get probation for offenses that an average person would immediately be incarcerated for. This is one such example. And such offenses will only get worse if examples are not made.
I have said begfore in many cases that celebrities should be treated harsher than others because they have fame. They influence children and the impressionable. They perpetuate a disrespect of the law in their actions. Few outside of perhaps Lindsey Lohan are as bad as Paris Hilton in these respects (though to be fair, Lohan has some ability and purpose in existence) – by the way, Lohan was arrested this weekend too.
The Hilton fortune has bought Paris fame, which she does nto deserve, and preference in legal matters – which is an insult to the legal system. It is high time that she get what everyone else in the nation would get for this crime. She needs to go to jail for 2 or 3 years. She needs her rights restricted and her name to be prefaced with the term ex-convict.
There is not one reason that Paris Hilton should not be found guilty and serve time. Any judge that denies her what she apparently desires should themselves be arrested for obstruction of justice.

She doesn’t seem to be thinking clear enough about how this behaviour act on her fans and others girls trying to follow her steps to success.
