Michael Jordan saves the day

It is always a pleasure to note the donations of celebrities to good causes. Considering the wealth and fame that many celebrities have, it’s just refreshing to see them giving to communities and presenting a positive image. An image that gets far less attention than the missteps and moral failures that fill many websites, tabloids, and cable news outlets.
Michael Jordan made a donation of $250,000 to the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools system so that the middle school sports program could survive budget cuts. It seems that the city budget was skewed from projections and $1.2 million needed to drop from the budget. So the obvious target was the sports program, which was not only to be cut but would have charged students $50 to be involved ($100 if they are in high school).
The donation of Jordan made a huge difference. It dwarfed the collective donation of the NFL Players Association and the Carolina Panthers of $56,000. But then again, Michael Jordan has a history with North Carolina that goes to his college basket ball days and even earlier. Even today there is a connection for Jordan as he is the owner of the Charlotte Bobcats.
Still, no matter the history, the fact is that this donation directly affects and benefits kids that otherwise would be suffering. It’s unfair to expect that such a huge charitable action will happen every time the city fails to live up to expectations – thus we can hope that city officials get their act straight in the year of time they have been granted by this donation.
Again, commendations to Jordan for what he has done. I hope it inspires kids (and adults) from around the nation.
