Mortal Kombat – backstory rebirth in live-action
By Michael Vass | January 25, 2011
Back on August 16, 2010 we presented a video clip that millions have since seen. Mortal Kombat: Rebirth. A revisioning of the Mortal Kombat film saga. A revision that happily is far superior to all its predecessors, combined. At the time we said that should not be the last of the Rebirth concept – and Warner Bros. agrees.
We have been told that sticking with Mortal Kombat: Rebirth director Kevin Tancharoen, Warner Premiere – a division of Warner Bros. – will promote several live-action backstories of the characters involved in the videogame franchise. Keyword there is “videogame”. Not the horredous movies take on the games but the games themselves.
So far there is no word on who will be featured from the videogame besides Scorpion, Johnny Cage and Liu Kang, nor who might be the actors to portray those characters in the live-action videos. The press release today was just squarely focused on Warnwer Bros. promoting its various divisions, and that the final product will be delived via the internet. Likely via some form of on-demand service from Warner Bros.
We really hope that Michael Jai White remains Jax. In fact we hope that Warner Bros. was smart enough to spend some money and really develop these background stories along the vision that director Kevin Tancharoen has already displayed. That would be the smart way to recoup this investment. But Hollywood studios tend to think they have all the answers, so who knows.
Whatever the result, all the answers should be pouring in around April 19th, when the latest version of the Mortal Kombat videogame comes out. Just watch out for the inevitable bootlegs and spammers trying to dupe people.
