Season 4 of Eureka continues on SyFy

By Michael Vass | July 12, 2011

So the new episodes of season 4 for Eureka started last night. The new night is Monday, which is an abysmal timeslot, but makes sense as SyFy Channel is notorious for destroying the fanbase for all of their successful and legitimate sci fi shows.

The new season started off with quite the shock. A marriage. And not just any marriage, but it appeared as one between Sherrif Carter and Dr. Blake. At least for the first 2 minutes. Then, just as fans like myself were shouting confused thoughts of delight and apprehension at the television, we find out it was between S.A.R.A.H. (the house that Sherrif Carter lives in) and Deputy Andy (the cybernetic comedy piece of the show).

It was a nice move and a tinge sad based on the outcome. But it gave a thought that the series will continue to keep fans pleased as it moves forward.

Then things got bogged down. The annoying on/off relationship “that doesn’t exist anymore” of Zane and GD Head of Security Lupo kicked in. Seriously, the Zane character was useless and annoying prior to the shift in reality that the show underwent. It is even more innane and useless now. But the series seems to need a romance in trouble, so there you go.

Of course the writers seem to be stepping up Fargo a bit. Though he still fluctuates from silly and geeky to authoritative far too quickly and to ill effect. Yet in this episode he spend most ot the time showing more backbone than ever in the series. It added to the character and supported the reason why he is a fan favorite.

By contrast, the issues of the cowardly and inept, if not completely lazy, Zane were on display as well. You almost could hope for the character to be on the way out of the series, if not for the way that his character is tied back into the open secret of the leads.

At this point, is there any recurring character that does NOT know that Carter, Blake, Henry, Fargo, and Lupo are misplaced in dimensional reality?

On that note, Henry’s wife (in this reality) is again on the happy and in love phase of her bi-polar reactions to the marriage that exists but doesn’t. Who knows when she will flip out again, as seems to happen every 3rd episode or so. Either she can deal with all this, or she can’t. Write it out and let it be done already.

Overall, the episode after the first 2 minutes was a bit sloppy and mediocre at best. The writers usually do a better job with their homework in the science arena. Like if the spacecraft had no life support, Zane and Fargo should have been freezing throughout half the episode. Or the fact that Deputy Andy weighs far too much for Jo Lupo to carry up a rope, or to ride on the back of a horse with Sherrif Carter.

Yes, nitpicking details, but again the show usually covers this well. The writers are getting a bit lazy. Which may not be a good thing in the future episodes.

Is the show still worth watching? Yes. But there is a spark that only occasionally shows now, as compared to before. The thought that the show may have jumped the shark with the whole Gaius Baltar/time/dimension shift episodes are getting more persistent.

One big example? Well at the end of the episode, when we are awaiting the entrance of the big new star cast member for the season (there have been an ever growing number of these) there was a hope for Dr. Nathan Stark – Ed Quinn, who recently did a wonderful job for the Kettle One vodka commercials – to reappear. Instead of that mega blast to jumpstart storylines, we got Ming-Na (good on E.R., recently recycled from the failed Stargate Universe).

Was that really the best they could do? Not so much as in reference to Ming-Na, as in that’s all the writers could come up with? Or is it that the eternally dim minds at SyFy and parent NBC, just needed to use up Ming-Na’s contract from Stargate Universe?

Whatever the reason, fans – in likely diminishing numbers – will stay tuned. New fans will likely miss out on the best of what the show can be, and has been. The next episode, from the teaser scene, gives no indication that things are going to improve any time soon.
