Reflecting on V for Vendetta and American politics

So I was sitting home responding to comments on the VASS blog site, when I ran into a comment to my post thanking the Marines, the Armed Forces, and veterans for all they have done for this nation. The comment was an attempt to mock my heartfelt thanks. My reply was direct and obviously in direct opposition. Then I watched V for Vendetta.

It seems a bit ironic that I would watch a movie about how wrong a Government can go immediately after defending a Government that some feel has gone wrong. But there is the issue. Of late there have been a horde of movies demanding that America realize that utter chaos is ruling the nation. According to some there are no freedoms left. Such was the comment made at the abovementioned post. Such is the fare of movies.

Yet the reality is far from this. In V for Vendetta we see a government that has used its own people for biological experimentation. A scary thought for a movie. Except when you consider that America has already done this. They were called the Tuskegee Experiments. And America did not fall.

In the movie similarities are drawn to the Nazi’s, and fanatical Islamist governments that persecute the unwanted parts of their societies. Not unlike the way America had legal lynchings until 1922 (after 7 years of trying to pass the law) and Jim Crow to replace slavery. And America has not fallen.

In the movie the media is used to manipulate how people think. Unlike the direct commentary in the silver screen; reality only has pictures in newspapers (like the photo in post-Katrina New Orleans showing a Black man with a bag in flood waters called a looter, but a White man with a similar bag in waters equally as high is called a survivor looking for food), or news programs that attack the death of an athlete (Sean Taylor – his murder was a discussion of his actions as a teen) versus the months-long sorrow for drug addicts (Heath Ledger, Anna Nicole Smith, Britney Spears – oops she’s still alive right? Well you get the point). And yet America lives on.

For all the fears and horrors that movies imply, state, or hint at America remains the greatest nation in the world. Year after year, for centuries we have seen people across the globe come to this nation by any means they can. The fact America has issues with people of color is not only known, it’s advertised in every medium we have – and still they come. And all the detractors stay.

Why?

Because we aren’t losing all our freedoms. That even if we had half the freedoms that exist now we still would be the freest nation in the world. That we have the greatest ability to allow virtually anyone, or their kids, to have a better life. Because we are more than rich in wealth, we are rich in freedom which has no price tag.

Now this is not to say there aren’t problems in bundles. I do not hide from the issues that need to be dealt with, nor do I accept the word of the Government as Gospel. There are reasons why some think that the Government killed its own people on 9/11 (and this is not about V for Vendetta), or that drugs and AIDS were shoved into the poorer, more racially diverse parts of cities across the country. But at the same time, the people still have power to change how the Government acts.

Fear, some say, it the motivation of the day. But I also see the other side. The fear being feed like a crack dealer via the major media stating not that a terrorist is under your bed, but that the Government is out of control.

We cannot allow ourselves to be blinded by fear – of fanatical religious groups that believe sex with children is ok (Texas), that killing abortionist is ok (Christian), that women have no rights or that suicide bombs make sense (Islam). All those fears are real, existing in this country and outside of it, but they cannot destroy us unless we allow them. In the same manner we cannot be drugged with the opiate of the masses (television, movies, the internet) when some choose to use it to tell us to fear the very thing we control.

If a movie like V for Vendetta tells us anything it is not that we have lost everything. We haven’t even though we have done everything that they fear we might. But if we get lulled by this fear we will be no better off, in fact worse off, than the reality that surrounds us.

I love my country. That why I vote, and promote others to do so. It’s why I cover the Presidential race. It’s why I point out the schism in the media. It’s why I defend what I think is right, and address what is wrong. And it’s why we cannot blindly fight against one fear to just accept another.

I want to leave you with a quote from that movie, apply it as you will

“What we need right now is a clear message to the people of this country. This message must be read in every newspaper, heard on every radio, seen on every television. This message must resound throughout the entire Interlink! I want this country to realize we stand on the edge of oblivion. I want every man woman and child to understand how close we are to chaos. I WANT EVERYONE, TO REMEMBER WHY THEY NEED US!”

What Black Men Think: Youtube videos - 3.1.2008.1

A friend of mine made me aware of a video that I think deserves to get far more attention. You can find it on YouTube under the title "What Black Men Think PSA".

Several of these ideas and issues I have covered here and at VASS. But some things can never be said enough. Especially with the major media making a point of portraying every negative they can, as often as they can.

But don't stop with this video or my blog. Seek out the information for yourself. Learn and revel in the fact that we are all more than the music videos present. We are not limited to just being entertainers and athletes.

And then there is this video for those of you that like spoken word and probably hip-hop. In checking out the above video I found the following. What it says about gangsta rap is near and dear to me.

I warn you all that it contains profanity, the N-word (which I still hate, but if it is the means to convey it's true meaning I will acquiesce), and fully concieved thoughts. But I expect all my readers can handle that.

Quick message from Michael Vass - 2.6.2008.1

I'm a little behind on the latest news here, particularly the way that the media has been treating recent events like the Sean Bell trial, coverage of the Wesley Snipes victory, comments by Snoop Dogg and 50 cent about their Presidential candidate picks and a few other items. Please bear with me.

The win by the Giants, which was sweet and should have been expected since historically Giants always have a good defense, resulted in a bit of a hangover that I'm sure many fans shared.

Add to that the launch of my I Love America That's Why I Vote! campaign, which you can find out more about by clicking the hyperlink above or visiting VASS and it was a busy start to the week.

Then all the activity from Super Tuesday (results of which, and my thoughts, can be seen at the aforementioned VASS) and you can imagine the backlog.

But never fear, I'm working hard and for your continued readership. In the meantime, if you would like to join the support for the That's Why I Vote! let me know, or visit my online store and see the dedicated clothing line showing your pride and Constitutional Right to vote, and/or you can make a donation to help me continue my efforts.

No matter what, thank you for visiting the site.

Vote! Your voice matters!

M V Consulting, Inc. reports growth in 2007 - 1.9.2008.1

New York (PRWEB) January 9, 2008 -- M V Consulting, Inc. announced today that the final numbers for the entire year of 2007 have been tabulated with phenomenal results. The Company's websites have grown at a remarkable pace, exceeding expectations and indicative of positive acceptance by internet users. In addition the Company's sites were involved with several promotions and events that could not be anticipated, and display the impact that has been made to date.

"2007 was a great year. The blogs of the company grew by over 100% in virtually every metric that can be identified. The give away contests sponsored by the company were well received, if predominantly regional. We were surprised and pleased to receive the opportunity to work with TV One on live coverage of the Heartland Presidential Forum on December 1st 2007. That's something you just can't predict and we are thrilled about it, while looking forward to working with TV One again in the future," stated M V Consulting, Inc. President Michael Vass.

Actual performance numbers are considered proprietary by the Company, but percentile growth and other metrics are available for the public. Some of the most important metrics are:

  • Visitors to the site tend to be 41% men, and 59% women

  • 46% of visitors tend to be between the ages of 25 - 54

  • 51% of visitors are college educated, with 37% having no college education at all

  • Visitors to Black Entertainment USA for the 12 months ending December 31st 2007 increased by 156%.

  • Individual pages viewed by visitors on Black Entertainment USA increased by 367%

  • The number of visitors from countries across the globe increased by 35%

  • At the Vass site the breakdown was (this blog only existed for the last 4 months of 2006):

  • Visitors for the full year increased by 5900%

  • Individual pages viewed by visitors on Vass increased by 9700%

  • While the number of countries remained relatively flat. The lack of growth in countries outside the USA may be attributable to the increased focus on the Presidential race and candidate's campaigns throughout 2007 as well as the limited time of existence in 2006.

The M V Consulting, Inc. corporate homepage was launched in May 2007 and therefore has no comparative numbers. Growth was solid and comparable to the first 7 months of either blog, reaching on average 48 countries across the world.

The Company also owns an online store which features 12 separate and distinct clothing lines, as well as providing custom designed mugs, mouse pads, Teddy bears, gift cards, journals, postage stamps and more. Individual sales figures for this division are not reported.

Results of the Company's SEO division are not reported and considered proprietary.

Other events

Several other events occurred in 2007 that were of significant importance. The Company created and sponsored 3 separate contests in 2007.

  • Robin Roberts book - From the Heart - in association with Authorsontheweb.com

  • Dinner at the Instinct Restaurant - in association with Instinct in Endicott, New York

  • $1000 for the holidays - run by M V Consulting Inc. with a $100 bonus added to the winning prize given to Cheryl W of New York State.

In addition to these contests, the company was contacted by TV One, which reaches 40 million people via its cable network channel. On December 1st 2007 TV One had a live webcast of the Heartland Presidential Forum, for which it selected 5 political bloggers to comment on live. Of the thousands of potential bloggers available, President Michael Vass was selected for his writing at the Vass blog, and was invited to join the event as one of the 5 bloggers. The company accepted, creating over 9 posts related to the event (prior and after the event) including 6 live during the event.

TV One and M V Consulting, Inc. cross-promoted the event via the individual websites of each company.

    Additional items

To date, the various blogs of the Company have created nearly 1000 posts in total. In 2007 alone there was an increase of 201% in the number of posts. The blogs had a total number of posts that exceeded the number of days in the year, thus exceeding publication rates of virtually every other media format and/or syndicated author.

The blogs of the Company have dealt with some of the most topical issues of the year, if not several of the most controversial in perhaps 100 years. Those topics included the death of Anna Nicole Smith and James Brown. The scandals surrounding Don Imus, Duane 'Dog' Johnson, Michael Vick, and Megan Williams. The Presidential candidates of both political parties. Also news involving entertainers and celebrities such as Paris Hilton, Wesley Snipes, Will Smith, Denzel Washington, Oprah Winfrey, George Clooney, and more. Not to mention reviews of restaurants, movies, books, and video games and information about Darfur and the Child Solider Prevention Act.

President Michael Vass is also a contributing author for the 1800blogger.com family of blogs. Mr. Vass writes for a total of 8 additional blogs on a regular basis besides those of the Company.

Mr. Vass stated, "This is only the beginning. Growth has exceeded all expectations and for 2008 we have raised the bar. While visitors to the various sites of the Company equaled or exceeded several metropolitan areas of the United States, our goal now is to reach the equivalent population of the major urban centers of the nation, if not New York City itself. Expect to see our clothing lines in colleges across the nation. And we are looking to lock down 2 exclusive sponsors for the various sites, further minimizing advertising clutter and providing an immersive and non-distracting atmosphere near term. Expect more news on other events soon."

Success in 2007 - Thank You

As the year is coming to an end I wanted to take a moment to reflect on some of the reasons why I have had a successful and prosperous year. I would love to say it was merely my efforts and quality of my writing that has grown all my blogs and M V Consulting, Inc. But to say that would be a lie.

In the past year I have spoken with, read blogs and articles by, and debated with multiple bloggers, programmers, graphic artists, lawyers, friends and associates. It is because of this multitude of people I have had the ideas, and comments I have shared with you all, and it has shaped in part or in whole the look of all my sites. I can only hope I will always be aware enough to pay attention to such good advice and insight, and thus provide the caliber of posts you have all come to expect.

In particular there are several that stand out and I want to thank directly. I invite you to review their sites and blogs as well.

    Top blogs

  • http://www.Buzzologysurveys.blogspot.com – A long time supporter of my blogs and efforts. I’m always happy to work with this blogger.

  • http://caseylartigue.blogspot.com - One of the bloggers that joined me in the TV One sponsored live commentary on the Heartland Presidential Forum.

  • http://www.polichicksonline.com - Another of the bloggers that joined me in the TV One sponsored live commentary on the Heartland Presidential Forum.

  • http://www.africanamericanopinion.com – A site I cross-blog at that also occasionally provides me thoughts to post on. Filled with multiple views that cross the spectrum.

  • http://www.1800blogger.com – I am a contributing author to multiple blogs here and work closely with this company.

    Sites

  • http://www.tvoneonline.com/presidentialforum.asp - TV One selected my blog and several other bloggers to comment live on the Heartland Presidential Forum. You can see the Forum at this site, and also get to view the 5 bloggers invited to be involved in this event.

  • http://www.theaddesignguys.com - Graphic Design Services – My graphic designer, who takes my jumbled ideas and turns them into the polished t-shirt, mug, Teddy bear, and site graphics you see.

  • http://www.authorsontheweb.com – They selected my blog to review the Robin Roberts book, From the Heart, and worked with me in providing my first give away contest.

  • http://www.prweb.com – The media outlet that I use to distribute my press releases. Affordable, and effective in reaching the world.

  • http://www.cafepress.com – The basis on which my online store functions. Making it possible for even new entrepreneurs to be in business for themselves.

    Guest Writers and Friends

Each of these individuals has helped me consistently provide quality posts. Several have directly or indirectly created posts found at Black Entertainment USA or Vass

  • Michael H.
  • Audrey B.
  • Claudia M.
  • Jennifer V.

    Special note

  • Mr. Malik Shabazz – the attorney for Ms. Megan Williams in West Virginia. I’ve spoken with him several times, and supported his efforts at the rally to draw national attention to the horrendous kidnapping, torture, and rape of Ms. Williams.

It is in part due to the efforts and help of the above mentioned sites and people that I have been able to have the success that 2007 has been. I look forward to continuing the relationships I have, and growing to include others in 2008.

To those I have mentioned, and most importantly you my readers, I say thank you. None of my efforts would matter with out you.

Repost - Pros and Cons of Republican Presidential candidates

This is a repost that can be found at Vass

Not long ago I created a list of Pros and Cons of the leading Democratic Presidential candidates. To be fair and to see the differences I have complied a Pros and Con list for the leading major Republican candidates.

I do not presume that this list is all-encompassing. I recognize that while I have tried to be neutral, just as I was with the Democrats, I’m sure there are areas where my personal views entered. I do not claim my list is complete or how everyone feels. But I believe it is accurate.

Some issues may fall on both sides, because depending on personal views it is a positive or negative. Most are far more easily categorized. If you disagree, please make a comment and give your reasons why. You may be right, so why not share your thoughts?

You can see some of my source information at On The Issues and 2008 Election ProCon.

Now for the breakdowns (in alphabetical order):

      Rudy Giuliani

      Pros

    • 9/11
    • For the Death Penalty
    • Finish Iraq war
    • No Nuke Iran
    • Waterboarding (Torture ok)
    • Mayor of largest U.S. City
    • Lower taxes

      Cons

    • Mixed on Gun Control
    • No International experience
    • Flipped on gay marriage
    • Mayor was highest level of public service experience
    • Relies heavily on 9/11
    • Flipped on Immigration policies

JP Morgan Chase on Slavery apology Part 2 - 5.15.2007.2

Continued from JP Morgan Chase sharholders vote on Slavery apology - 5.15.2007.1 Part 1...

Similar thoughts were held by Pete Flaherty, President of National Legal and Policy Center, who said,
“If JPMorgan Chase CEO Jamie Dimon were alive 200 years ago and owned slaves, the apology would be appropriate. Otherwise it is about as cynical and as hollow as you can get.”

For its part JP Morgan did not back down. The company sought to have this resolution blocked by the SEC. That failed, but the JP Morgan Chase held the position issued in 2005 as stated in its proxy. The vote took place today during the Annual Meeting which started at 10am.

As stated by Mr. Joe Evangelisti, representative of JP Morgan Chase, to me directly via phone, the resolution only garnered approximately 2 ½% of votes. This resolution failed, and I commend both JP Morgan and its shareholders for that fact.

At a time in the nation where we are rightly punishing individuals that use the public airwaves to attack innocent citizens with crude racial slurs, and are taking to task entertainers that are using that same public radio medium (along with ringtones, music videos, and other mediums) to spew equally offensive comments under the pretext of artistic expression, we must stay aware. While some 97 ½% of votes stood behind JP Morgan Chase, the balance of the voters did not. Politicians continue to reject the thought of an apology or reparation. Legislation continues to be stagnant on addressing the past. The United States government still has never made a public apology, while apologies and reparations to Native American Indians and Japanese Americans have been.

This is the quiet, seldom spoken fact of American history. It is a lesson in humanity that we cannot learn from since we refuse to even address it. Some of us, from every creed and race, have looked in the mirror and come to terms with the past. But as seen in the need for a vote at JP Morgan Chase today, some have not.

The cost for a lack of vigilance is more than mere words, in my opinion. The stakes have not changed. Racism and the means to divide our citizens continue to exist, merely waiting for a time when few are watching to take root and prosper. In a world of soundbites and 30 second news clips it’s easy to lose sight of what is happening. But if we do lose sight, if resolutions are brought and commendable acts are rescinded, we travel a path to repeat history. That path is painful and detrimental to everyone, not just those targeted initially with injustice.

I’m happy to state that JP Morgan Chase stood their ground, that the shareholders in majority agreed, and that the apology and scholarship continue to exist. This is another step to a better, greater America in my opinion. Now let’s take another step.

This is what I think, what do you think?

Repost of Letter to Senator John McCain - 2.24.2007.1

This is a repost from www.mvass.com:

    February 23, 2007
    Senator John McCain,

I am writing your today due to your announced intention to seek the Presidency of the United States in the 2008 election. I have made similar inquiries to Senators Clinton and Obama, Mr. Edwards and Mr. Romney. I intend to also contact other individuals that seek the Presidency in the future.

Senator McCain, it is my firm belief that it is never too soon to ask questions of those that wish to hold the highest office of the nation. I believe that the right of American citizens to vote for our representatives in government must be tempered with a reasonable understanding of the positions and opinions of the candidates we must chose from. I equally feel strongly that those candidates, especially those seeking the Presidency, have an obligation to provide a full and clear explanation so that the public may make the best choice for the nation.

I also wish to make you aware that I am not just asking questions of you positions for my own benefit, but that of thousands of individuals most of which are Americans. By this I mean that each letter I have sent out has, and will be, reproduced word for word on several websites and blogs that I own or write for. These postings reach a cross-section of America in cities and towns of all sizes found in every state, and citizens of every political party, race, sex and age group.

While I cannot say that I can motivate these readers to vote as a group to or for any one individual, which is not my intention but rather providing information, I can say that there are far more than enough reading to have changed the outcome of the last 2 Presidential races.

I will further add that any responses to the following questions will be reproduced on the same sites this letter will be found on. I will NOT edit or change a single word of any response. I believe that your unalter comments are far too important.

If you wish to review some of the proposed websites they will include, but are not limited to, the following: www.mvass.com, www.blackentertainmentblog.com, www.vassconsult.com/politics/election2008.html .

As for my questions, one of the most prominent is that of your age. If you were to win the Presidential election you would be 72 years of age. Do you feel that your age is, or could become during your term, a matter of concern? If it is not, why do you believe this?

In reference to the current war in Iraq, and more generally on the issue of terrorism, you have stated clearly that you believe that America must act with decisive strength without pause until the mission is attained. You further have clearly stated that actions to limit troop strength or resources for troops is tantamount to emboldening the enemy. In the face of growing opposition to the war, why do you feel such a stance is required? What do you foresee as a consequence if we do not continue to fight? What exit plan do you have for Iraq, and how would you implement such a plan? What do you believe to be the steps in the near future that will be needed to ensure the safety of Americans at home and abroad?

I respect and understand the experiences you had during the Viet Nam war. My father also served in Viet Nam, in the Marine Corps, and I too volunteered for service. Given the tribulations of your decorated time in service, how would you lead the nation in dealing with the question of terrorist captives (which I believe do not fall under the Geneva Code) and gaining information to prevent future terrorist activities?

It has been noted that your positions on several issues have changed since the 2000 Presidential campaign or even before that. One of the questions has been your stance with regard to conservative Christians, specifically Rev. Jerry Falwell, where you seem to have backtracked. What was the motivation for your change of opinion from 2000 to 2006?

In regard to your stance on Roe v. Wade, you have said in 1999 that you would not repeal the law, though you wished there was no need for it. Recently you have changed your opinion to be actively against the law. What has caused your more aggressive stance?

Considering that you are in favor of teaching abstinence, against other forms of sex education and birth control, what do you believe will happen to those women that become pregnant if Roe v. Wade is repealed? Also what responsibility does the government have to mothers that find themselves with children but without enough means to support those children, and where does that funding come from, again if Roe v. Wade is repealed?

You have mentioned in the past, as I understand, that you would like to give a means for the illegal immigrants in the nation today to become citizens. What process would you follow to do this and do you feel that even the consideration of such a law would encourage further illegal immigration? Also by making a potentially 10-20 million individuals citizens in an extremely short period of time, how would the government handle the surge in social programs and government agencies (such as local DMV, Social Security, Welfare, Unemployment and so forth)?

I have certain fears in regard to embryonic stem cell research, which you have changed your opinion on. What swayed your opinion, and how would you as President help to restrict abuses from this research (such as genetic based diseases, targeted to specific genotypes such as Native Indians or Negroids or Pacific Islanders)?

What legislation have you enacted that directly improved the lives of African Americans and Hispanic or Latino Americans in your home state and the nation? In regard to education, what specific actions would you take to stem the growing numbers of African Americans that are dropping out of high school and/or finding the cost of higher education impossible to overcome?

I want to thank you for taking the time to read this letter. I look forward to your response. I again mention that this letter, and any response will be posted without an alteration.

    Sincerely,

    Michael Vass

M V Consulting, Inc. Announces Growth and Expansion Through 2006

This is a copy of my recent press release issued Jan 9, 2007

New York, NY (PRWeb) January 9, 2007 -- Mr. Michael Vass, president of M V Consulting, Inc. ("MVC") and author of Black Entertainment USA (www.blackentertainmentblog.com) and Vass (www.mvass.com) - wholly owned by MVC, announced the achievement of milestones and annual growth for the year ending December 31, 2006. Since the January 2006 launch of the websites over 320 web posts have been published to date. In this first year of operation there has been a large range of topics covered including: Black African American cultural trends in television, theatrical movies, music videos, video games; news relating to athletes, musicians, politicians, actors and other entertainers and celebrities; reviews of movies, books, and restaurants; national and or international events such as the World Cup and the war in Iraq.

"This has been an incredible year of growth. Since the inception of the sites there have been tens of thousands of visitors the sites owned by MVC. Visitors to the sites have come from countries across the globe including England, Ireland, Japan, Kuwait, Lesotho, Oman, Singapore, South Africa, Spain, and Venezuela to name a few. Acceptance on a global basis as has happened is a happy surprise and an expression of the need for honest commentary from a unique perspective," stated Mr. Vass.

Mr. Vass went on to say that, "With the speed that news and events can be learned of and communicated, larger media cannot always provide enough time for a topic that may be of interest. Busy individuals can't always take the time to seek out subjects that are important to them, if they even know these subjects have news. The fact that these sites also contain a personal viewpoint on these subjects adds a level of personal interaction that many media outlets cannot provide. These are the assets that I feel are vital to the growth that has occurred and continues as I speak. "

The websites, a blend of a traditional website and a blog (or weblog), have continued to expand in their content throughout the year. Currently the websites include sections such as a biography of Mr. Vass, original poetry, audio files for both the poetry and selected web posts, a continuously growing reference list of websites and information of importance, 2 reader feedback surveys, portions of a storyboard for a potential graphic novel or motion picture, a large and growing catalogue with models showcasing unique clothing lines found at the company's online store (cafepress.com/nova68), and a simple but effective sitemap to help guide visitors through the sites.

For additional information on this release, comments about this article, or general site information contact Mr. Michael Vass or visit either BlackEntertainmentBlog.com or MVASS.com. Comments on any posts should be added to the appropriate comments section on the sites.

The joys of Will Ferrell, Ping Pong and the Police - 1.5.2007.1

With the new year started I’ve decided to add a few different thing to the posts for the site. One thing that I will be adding is specifically due to the up-coming Presidential elections. For those that have visited my Vass site this is not new news but I am planning to write letters to the Presidential candidates, hopefully all of them, addressing concerns and asking specific questions on their platforms. My letters to these individuals will be posted unaltered, and when I receive a response it will be posted unaltered as well. At this time I have sent a letter to Senator Clinton, and Mr. John Edwards. Neither at this time have responded. I will try to mention the status of the letters going out, and any responses received on this blog once a week, but definitely at least once a month. The leadership of this nation is our choice, this is an opportunity to learn what we are choosing.

A separate item I plan to add on a weekly basis is a bit of a calendar. I hope to highlight various dates of note to Black Americans, and Latino Americans. This includes birthdays of famous individuals, ground-breaking firsts, and other items.

    In this week:
Emancipation Proclamation issued by President Lincoln
The first African American child is born in America in 1624. His name is William Tucker.
    Congression
